Following on the earlier thread of riding in cold weather,
I just commuted in to work today on ym bike in 1 degree celcius. Aka 33F.

I wore all my gear (including rain liner in pants and raidn overcoat above jacket to break the wind). I was warm except my ankles and my chin.

I would not recommend it to anyone with a trip that involves speeds above 40mph for any length of time, even with a full faced helmet.

That said, I felt great once I got to work.

I took a quick ride last night, it was probably in the high 30’s F. Kind of chilly but manageable, then again I was only out for about a 1/2 hour. Realized when I got back that zipping the vents on my jacket might have been a good idea. Oh well, if that was the worst mistake I made yesterday, and it was, it was a pretty successful ride.

I have been freezing in the mornings for a while now- I’m up to microfiber long underwear top and bottom, a long sleeved t-shirt, a rain suit (not for the wet, but for the fact that air doesn’t really go through it), my armored pants, my jacket, liner, a scarf, the chin cover thingy on my helmet, and my isotoners under my riding gloves. And I live in AZ- cold mornings in the mountains, baking on the way home. Good stuff. It’s good to know that it’s doable when it gets colder- I would imagine that there’s a point where it can’t get any colder. Although I will be adding another layer to my gloves int he form of an over-mitten of sorts to close up those vents(15 bucks to make, vs 50+ for leather gloves).

I truly believe that microfiber is cut from pure firmament. it just feels soooo good.

I wonder how it’ll feel riding during the winter…or perhaps more importantly, the summer, as Mark Twain once said “the coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Fransisco”

my only other experience was riding a bike to work in central illinois during the winter. freezing cold, dressed in layers, sweating like a meatloaf by the time I got to work. riding a motorcycle will obviously involve more wind, and less exertion so certainly would be colder.

Got a bit of an “oh crap” moment today when I passed through a construction zone. A water truck had been leaking a small srpay of water into the tire paths of the cars – and had frozen. Okay, careful ridding down the centre of the lane and watch out for any corners…

Good ride other than that.

Ok, I am going out on my lunch TODAY to look for Isotoners to go under my riding gloves, nearly froze my finger tips off last week, thanks for that idea!

If you ever move up to the Gold Wing world of massive tourers, you can get factory installed seat heaters too!
I’ve never seen an aftermarket bum heater though…

That would be nice also! I love luxury items like that but, I don’t have millions so no luxury butt warmer on my motorcycle for me.
