    wow.

and everyone here is freaking out about the 6-12″ we MIGHT be getting here in DC/Jersey section of the states….

me personally I’ve never seen that much snow but I know 6″ is nothing in a lot of places… its beautiful for sure though- thanks for sharing!

the majority of people have a hard time with right turns are RIGHT handed…. so it makes sense that if you are left handed- you would have a harder time with left turns and an easier time with rights.

The why mechanics behind that- not sure but it makes sense knowing that most people suck at rights and are right thanded… that you would be better at rights being left handed.

And whoever said that stuff about binary 1 and 0 regarding riding into the other land or off the road a little bit- I don’t like binary never have never will- but that was a suprisingly good definition of that. =) totally cool. thanks!

well I’m sure there are way better ways to describe it or simplier ways and a diagram WOULD have helped and not being 10something at night but its an interesting subject that my education really has helped me understand more of in ways I would have been handicapped as far as understanding is concerned. so i get kind of excited that the fact the “when are we every going to use this” factor came into play. yeah I know. :D

I didn’t honestly think that there was anything like that in Jersey but google is my friend and I think I found one about 10 mikes out. I might be brave enough to try that before we get the shit storm on sunday.

The roomie and I took off for TGIF tonight and rode in the dark- excited to get out and ride even if in the *limited* visibility- it was better than fighting 5 oclock traffic at any one point. =) The little wings are growning so maybe I’ll get to play this game after all!

“Hough is talking about frame geometry. Just as an extended swing arms allows more energy to be usefully applied to driving the rear wheel, the extended fork rake found on most cruisers theoretically allows more force to be applied to stopping the front wheel (if all other factors are equal). I don’t think he was making a comparison between what top riders might be capable of. A little research of tested stopping distances often highlights that a number of cruisers, including ones with otherwise subpar discs and calipers, turn up some really decent stops, often matching some sport bikes with “better” suspension and brakes.”

As a new rider I know only what I read and much less from experiance. On the other hand several years of yeomans work in dynamics/physics (but not geometry specifically) ;) was screaming at me and you totally nailed it.

All else being equal- brakes/riders/conditions a touring/cruiser will be able to maximize MORE of its front brake than its sportbike competitor with a shorter wheel base simply because when you apply a force like that and it shifts the weight you get a lever that lifts up to the air- if there is a vertical force in the negative direction (i.e. saddle bags) its going to only help that coefficient of friction that is present on that contact patch. If the only weight a sport bike has is joblow 160 bls on a 425 lb bike and the weight is shifting forward and me joblow alreaady leaned forward you have much less of a negative force trying to keep that coefficient of friction engaged and its WAAAAAY more likely to pop up.

Basically its an algebra + dynamic forces equallity problem and you get a greater than less than situation The road pushes back on the bike equally- and that contact patch which we are all familar with- needs to have a certain amount of force on it- as soon as the numbers go this direction gravity + you plus bike and things < force pushing UP from the road/coefficient of friction your wheel goes up but if you keep the g + all your shit > ground your bike stays down. The shorter the bike the more weight goes forward the less downward force you have to help keep the little packman symbol in your favor.

If that made ANY sense at all- great… if not I’ll just go play nerd in my corner with my calculator now.

by the way I totally love reading all of these threads- soooo helpful and intersting! esp for locations and how people handle different things!

I actually got to go out Friday and people thought I was nuts- it was kind of windy but thankfully the grocery store to my house is well protect and you can’t get to much open gusting wind. =) I was only a little cold and super glad that I have Sophia cause the Dominator is in the truck with a busted tranny so I actually could go get the little things for my dinner dealio. cause walking in the wind would have sucked. A lot. =)

shit- I’m really out of luck- we need that model of pant to come with extra inserts cause I’m sort of in the negatives with proving my manliness!!!!

all that aside I think its kind of neat looking and I’m not totally in love with the nekkid bikes either.

Is it all the time, every time?
I’d say 2/3 of the time- we aren’t out enough for me to give a more specific answer. I’ll try to pin that down this weekend for you.

Is is more of a steam rather then “smoke”.
Pretty confident its a smoke not a steam

Where does it seem to emanate from, near exhaust couplers, close to a coolant line, etc.
Will try to narrow that down- the two of them got hands down face full with it- I didn’t.

As a robot named Number 5 would say
    “Need more input!”

Could be an oil issue on the headers- I’m not 110% if the shop got oil all over her bike I suspect they would have done a similar job on mine and i have no issue. But it could be. I’ll get in there and look it over today- hopefully I’ll get to ride today and we can have a closer look.

its dipping down into the 30s at night here and has been blustery the past few days…. I’ve seen a few folks about- I actually got out on Tuesday and rode down to get sophia inspected- main rodes and all (my coworker who rides followed me and gave me some tips by the time we were done) and it was GLORIOUS….

but its been going down hill since with wind and clouds and random thundershowers…

and I see them rolling around- and I’m jealous. Cause well their riding and I’m not- =D Otherwiiise its AWWWWESOME. Makes me all giddy like a litttttle kid in a candy store.

thanks guys thats all extremly helpful! No worries about information overload, I’ll pick and choose the most pressing and come back to the thread later to work through it- the beauty of forums means I don’t have to keep all my notes =)

    okay so:
    > early am rides

    > 12 second rule- not object fixation (proficient motorcycling mentioned it with a picture- much harder to do in real life than I anticipated! so I need to practice that A LOT)

    > speed issue- would like to check to see how off the gauge is but I feel like I will continue to ride as safely as I’m comfortable as ‘close’ to the speed limit for now until I do and if its a few under they can suck it. My brain getting splattered if I screw up cause I’m riding faster than I’m choose. I’m not going to get run off the road and do something dangerous cause they need their latte faster. But thats super useful to know I didn’t know most of them read high.

    > More start/stops- I’m going to count out 50 next time I’ll let you know how long it takes me to get bored lol.

    > More smaller drills are in order: like the u turn and turning from a stop. I think I’m getting comfortable on the real life street turning radius (like corners and what not) but haven’t gotten much tighter than that as far as my drills are concerned- I think its time to start pushing the cirlce a little smaller to get a better handle and more feel for the friction point- which as pointed out seems good till I hit that first intersection which was totally on point!

The parking lot I work in is about 60 yards by 40 yards which to me gets frustrating only because I would like to start increasing speed to practice quick stops but its good for slow work as it forces slower speeds.

Horse analogy was good- cause yes i ride one of those too. I’ll tuck that in my back pocket for the next trip.

Okie I’m armed with more goodies- fantastic. thanks guys very helpful.
Not sure i’m going to get to ride today- had to play wingman last night and the lager sticking with me today.

I have heard some dispparaing things- countersteering at low speeds is rough being on of the first and foremost but of the bikes I have sat on it was by far my favorite as fit- so thats what i went with… and I can imagine I’ll recieve some flak for admiting that thats my first bike but I’m not about blowing smoke- and I want to learn from as many sources as possible so if I am going to ask questions you all know what I’m dealing with you can help me better so thats what it is. I’d rather take the flak about having that bike than try to BS it and play nice. =) I’m a straight shooter like that.

its got nice brakes and is very responsive and I can feel when I booble something- which is much like my horse- small and efficient and very responsive to rider ainput good or bad.

My two biggest things I’ve been focusing on is stopping and smooth throttle application through my starts and through the turns- which I do a lot of since its a small parking lot!

Okay thats good to know- I don’t know how often people do that. That was what my roomie did for me on my first trip. I’m sure I’ll be helping her on her trip out too. I suspect it will be more often than not for a while. Thats reassuring its an acceptable option and we aren’t the only ones doing it!

I actually manned up and went out on the big streets (hit over 40 once or twice too :) ) seeing as how its right about turkey time andfewer people would be out on the street. Did a 8.5 lope with a stop at the gas station.

Only had three issues of note:
-I’m not nearly as smooth as starting on the street as I am in the parking lot

-I had two cars pass me over a double yellow so I think my speedometer is not working quiet right cause speed limit was 45 and I think I was doing just under at 42 or 43. that or they are just really that assholeish. Had one or two tailgaters too.

-And the little 2″ curb from the road to the gas station makes the bike wooble expectedly. And I wasn’t thinking fast enough to process 90* instead of the angle I was at till the very last second. So that was rough and i need to process that faster and sooner.
