Sorry no pics here.
Just thought how funny it is to be riding my bike this morning and evening to and from work. Morning temp was right at 30 F, we had rain over night ushering in the cold air and for a slight moment even I thought I must be nuts as I had to give my car door a good couple of bumps to crack the sheet of ice that kept it shut. I knew however the roads have been well more then too warm for ice to form as it had been near 70 the past couple of weeks.
All leathered up and a baclava under my full face and I was all toasty and wind proof.
Hit the main highway and just got thoroughly amused by all the looks I get from the onlookers. First thing that catches their eye is the LED’s I have under my tank reflecting off the chrome, then you see that sudden realization hit their face …that “GTFO of here…you DO realize it’s cold and your on a motorcycle!?”
Kept me in a good mood all day long. Hope everyone else got to ride!December 2, 2009 at 6:33 am #23581eonParticipantI got to ride today. Course it much warmer than you had. Somewhere in the 40’s but probably dropping into the 30’s tonight. The only part of me that ever gets cold is my hands. Even with my muffs and winter gloves I can still feel the chill but so far its been okay. Heated grips would be the bomb but I’m too lazy/cheap to go that road. What do you have for your hands?
December 2, 2009 at 11:11 am #23582MunchParticipantI have some gloves that Alpinstars makes that has Thinsulate ( 80 gram fill) that are supposed to be wind proof and water proof. They are wrong on both accounts. However the one thing I do have to my advantage is I have mechanic hands. Between all the cuts and calluses my hands can withstand a very broad range of temperatures. Once I get done buying this house though I am considering going to get a size too large full leather gauntlets and then getting some secondary liners to wear inside….. I read somewhere that something of the silk type nature helps with wind proofing. Or I will go get me those “Hippo Grip covers” for the really cold days. Scootworks has something like it in their selection.
December 2, 2009 at 8:18 pm #23584SantaCruzRiderParticipantI’m putting insulated gloves on my wish list (and if I don’t get them, I’m ordering some myself on the 28th!).
It’s dipping into the low 30s on my mountain commute (34 was the low this morning) and the set up I have ain’t cutting it. I’ve added cotton liners to my vented leather MC gloves and, no surprise, my hands are freezing. Luckily, I’m only in the pass for about 30 minutes, so I’m able to shake the feeling back into my thumbs before they go completely numb.
I like the baclava idea too, though a hooded sweatshirt under my leather jacket so far gives me the neck coverage I need.
December 2, 2009 at 9:14 pm #23585eonParticipantI added these a little while back and they help a lot.
It’s not been that cold here yet where I’ve really needed them but it’s been nice to have (especially in the wet weather, nice to have dry hands). Not quite the snug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug feeling I was hoping for but so far good enough.
December 4, 2009 at 1:13 am #23595IxecapadeParticipantits dipping down into the 30s at night here and has been blustery the past few days…. I’ve seen a few folks about- I actually got out on Tuesday and rode down to get sophia inspected- main rodes and all (my coworker who rides followed me and gave me some tips by the time we were done) and it was GLORIOUS….
but its been going down hill since with wind and clouds and random thundershowers…
and I see them rolling around- and I’m jealous. Cause well their riding and I’m not- Otherwiiise its AWWWWESOME. Makes me all giddy like a litttttle kid in a candy store.
December 7, 2009 at 1:46 am #23624owlieParticipantMy bike is toasty warm in the garage- though my plow-guy was duly impressed by it when he came to clear the 8″ of snow off the driveway last weekend.
December 7, 2009 at 2:56 am #23626okcponyParticipantHa ha, bought my husband some stuff for his Sporty for Christmas. Put it in a large box, wrapped it, and told him it was my daughter’s present, and stuck it way in the back of the tree. I think he’ll be quite surprised on Christmas morning!
Too cold & windy to ride now here in OKC. We went out two weeks ago, and even the hard-core bikers were commenting on how bad the wind made the riding. Guess it’s about time to add the Stay-bil or whatever it’s called to the tanks.December 13, 2009 at 7:57 pm #23689IxecapadeParticipantI actually got to go out Friday and people thought I was nuts- it was kind of windy but thankfully the grocery store to my house is well protect and you can’t get to much open gusting wind. I was only a little cold and super glad that I have Sophia cause the Dominator is in the truck with a busted tranny so I actually could go get the little things for my dinner dealio. cause walking in the wind would have sucked. A lot.
December 27, 2009 at 7:50 pm #23827wbsprudelsParticipantI got my first ride in over a week this morning. It was 28 but the roads were pretty dry despite the overnight snow dusting. We’re supposed to get 2-4 inches today so I wanted to get a ride in before that hit. I was riding in a light snow that was not sticking to the roads or my helmet.
I bought a pair of Gerbing G3 heated gloves that are awesome. I have ridden as cold as 14 degrees to work in the morning–hands feel great! I highly recommend them.
