    Well, Ben and I both work @ teh goog in mt. view. He’s stated elsewhere he works saturdays til about 4pm. Whoever wants to meet up, we could just meet up at the main google campus buildings around 4pm. Ben? :-P

    as far as minimum ride goes, I’m actually not sure. I’ve heard some distance after your engine’s good and hot. From what I’ve also heard, under 2 miles is not enough distance/time.

    I’m inclined to agree that a lower cc bike being lighter than 500cc or 600+cc bikes are better for learning how to ride at slower speeds. Kinda depends on what you mean by slower too. Just about any bike’s harder to deal with below ~5mph. In this case having a lighter bike’s definately a big plus. at speed, around 15 mph and above, this weight difference is somewhat negligible. Certain situations requiring certain maneuvers might be better on a lighter bike, but if you’re doing everything right (S.E.E) then these maneuvers don’t come into play. Good to practice them though in an empty parking lot in case doing everything right isn’t enough. ;-)

    My class there were 3 people that rode before. Everyone else has never ridden a motorized 2 wheeler-anything before taking the class.

    Well power wise, I can’t really see anyone ever really pushing an sv650 or a ninja650r to its limits on the open road…. Legally that is. The fact that you’re so unsure, makes me want to tell you to go with a 250cc bike. But from everyone I’ve ever talked to, an sv650 or ninja650 makes a decent beginner first bike.

    When slowing down, you can help the bike slow down faster by downshifting and releasing the clutch. It’s called engine braking. You can either go with a hard engine brake by not blipping the throttle, or you can blip the throttle to make the slow down more smooth. You can get the feel of engine braking by not blipping the throttle. You’ll get a pulled back feeling and your engine will definately tell you it’s slowing down. You don’t want to do this leaned into a turn, but if stopping or slowing down in a straight line, it’s ok to do. There is a raging debate on how and to what extent it affects your engine life. I personally love the feel of hard engine braking and my sv650s makes a sexy growl when doing it…

    What happened was they had an owner split. They called Kawasaki to tell them to pickup their ’05/’06 stock and Kawasaki mistakenly thought that they didn’t want to be Kawasaki dealers. So yeh, they aren’t official Kawa dealers at the moment. They do order the 250’s though and at the end of this “season”, they’ll become an official Kawa dealer again so they can get the ’09 stock before the next riding season.

    and actually going 10 miles is better for your bike than .5 miles… going only .5 mile rides does nasty things to your engine oil.

    They still service Kawasaki bikes, as far as I know. I was there last month getting my first mods installed and a guy came in to get his Ninja250 serviced.

    Yeh, true. If a dealership sells a few different manufacturers, you’d be more likely to get at least more honest opinions on particular makes. But having worked at music instrument retail for several years, being able to sell crap is a sales persons bread and butter… hence my cynisism.

    I’ve seen this video before and from what I can tell, it sure looks real. Even if it isn’t real, it’s a real possibility. As far as I can tell, it looks like the rider pulled in front of the truck way too close and trucks that big can’t stop on a dime either. But yeh, anything’s possible on the road.

    Just being somewhat facetious here, but somehow I don’t see a dealership that sells hyosungs really going out and telling customers hyosungs suck…

    If you’re doing that, it sounds like you’re opening the throttle too much while in 1st. It’s also safe to stay in second gear. Feather the clutch while rolling open the throttle. Ideally, you don’t want to drop to 1st until you’ve put the final squeeze on the brakes to stop.

    This kind of situation is easily practiced in an empty parking lot though.

    I really haven’t heard much about the ninja 650r, most likely due to the enormous popularity of the sv650 line. What I have heard is that it’s very comparable to the sv650 in terms of newbie friendliness. There was one middleweight shoot out with the ninja 650r, sv650, honda something in an online mag… Can’t remember which one it is, but the riders judged it to be as good a beginner bike as the sv650 line. They also said it had a more upright riding position which new riders might find more comfortable.

    Helmet

    Shoei RF-1000

    pros: Comfortable… very, very comfortable. Quick release for visor swapping.
    cons: Noisy. High pitched wind noise at faster than highway speeds (wear your earplugs). Ventilation really needs work. Even with a breather, the visor ends up getting fogged up until you start moving past 10 MPH. Assembly also needs work. After having this helmet for a couple of months, the mechanism for holding the visor points in place were very loose. Always check these before going out.

    Jackets

    Dainese Santa Monica Perforated pelle (Warm/cold weather)

    pros: Good ventilation, supple leather, fits great, CE rated armor, pants attachment mechanism (works with all Dainese pants). Also comes with an inside, insulated liner.
    cons: pricey. Being perforated makes it great for warm weather and the detachable inside liner makes it good for cold weather, but none of these makes the jacket water proof, so It’s not going to be good for moderate rainy weather. Back protector sold seperately.

    Dainese Laguna Seca Perforated pelle (Warm weather)

    pros: Good ventilation, supple leather, fits great, CE rated armor.
    cons: pricey. No pants attachment mechanism. I get annoyed at loose zippers, so I’ll only wear this jacket now if/when I get some basic riding jeans. No insulated, inner liner, so need to dress in layers for temp changes. Also not great for rainy weather. Back protector sold seperately.

    Rev-it! (don’t know the model… It’s some kind of Engineered Skin ™ 4 season jacket)

    pros: Great cold and rain weather jacket. Water proof. Detachable, insulated, inner liner. Comfortable textile.
    cons: pricey. No pants attachment mechanism for other rev-it! pants. Despite it billed as 4 seasons, this jacket sucks for warm weather riding. Very little vent mechanisms.

    Pants

    Dainese Drake Air

    pros: Comfortable textile pants. Great ventilation. CE rated armor. Padded.
    cons: pricey. Not good for cold or rainy weather.

    Rev-it! (don’t know the model… It’s some kind of Engineered Skin ™ 4 season pants)

    pros: See the Rev-it! jacket pros.
    cons: See the Rev-it! jacket cons.

    Boots

    Dainese Torque In

    pros: Great fit. Solid armor and ankle twisting protection. Pants attachment mechanism. Comfortable to wear for walking around in. Good grip with the soles.
    cons: pricey. Other than that, nothing else I can think of.

    Sidi Way Mega (Rain)

    pros: Water proof membrane. Very comfortable to wear. Good for even warm weather.
    cons: Outside boots. Stretch a lot. My pair now has a lot of play and movement inside the boot. Pricey. I no longer wear these boots at all.

    Gloves

    Dainese Racing (like the full metal racing but not using titanium for the armor)

    pros: Guantlet. Supple leather, ventilated, knuckle and joints protection. Ball of the hand and wrist “knuckle” protection. Great grip.
    cons: pricey (notice this trend with Dainese?). Doesn’t fit well over some leather jackets in larger sizes. It does fit great over my Santa Monica which is a 48 size. Somewhat uncomfortable scrunching on the Laguna Seca which is a size 50 – need to work the sleeves in. In rain, water will probably seep through the vented area.

    Things I got rid of

    Fieldsheer Kinnowa (Perforated leather jacket)

    pros: Good ventilation, supple leather, fits great, CE rated armor. Soft back protector included. Pants attachment mechanism for other Fieldsheer pants.
    cons: Not good for cold and rainy weather. Also, moderately pricey. I got last year’s fashion for 200.00USD out the door. The jacket retails for 300.00USD. While comfortable to wear, this jacket’s generally comfortable to wear, it caused a bruise on my sternum when riding and resting my chest on the tank (which I do a lot when riding on the highway). Sold this jacket to a friend for cheaper than what I got it for after a week. Yes, there was full disclosure…
