ParticipantThe only thing required by california law is a DOT approved helmet. And yes, I’ve seen riders in nothing but a helmet, shorts, short shirt, no armor, no socks, and low cut canvas sneakers. I still wave to them though.

ParticipantDude! I seriously dig that avatar. +1
The only time I’d pay 10+K on a bike would be if I was buying a ‘busa… which i wouldn’t, meaning, i wouldn’t spend 10+k on any bike let alone a scooter…. sorry, unless that thing is seriously uberfun, I think you spent way too much.

ParticipantYou don’t wear a helmet in california, you get ticketed and your bike gets towed to the impound.

ParticipantYou would be mostly correct. between the 2, the naked model is more noob friendly than the sport/faired model. the naked model has its handlebars higher, promoting a more upright sitting position. Also, being naked another point in favor of it being a decent noob bike is that there’s very little plastic to break. With frame sliders, the only thing you’d do if you drop your bike, at low speeds that is, is scratches at the end of the handlebars. If you’re just starting out and want a sports bike, really, imo, the both the SV types are not as good a choice as starting out with a ninja 250. but between the SV, i’d say the naked model is slightly more preferable to the sports faired model.

ParticipantIf you do take it to a dry cleaner and the jacket has removable armor, take out the armor before dropping it off… basically, anything removable, remove. Also, if the jacket stinks like you say it does, be nice to the dry cleaner and fabreeze the hell out of it and let it air out first before dropping it off to the cleaners.

ParticipantJay’s 7 feet tall and he kills men by the hundreds and if he were here, he’d consume the English with fireballs from his eyes, and bolts of lightning from his arse.

ParticipantAround here, it’s mostly the harley riders that never wave. Not saying that all harley riders never wave to me, just most of them don’t. Sports bike riders, whether the fully geared ones or the not so geared up ones, always either wave or nod. A lot of the goldwing riders don’t wave or nod either. I’ve never gotten the other kind of harley wave yet… The middle finger wave.

ParticipantI must’ve missed that. I don’t remember seeing the tuned for midrange in the mcn article i read. Couldn’t tell ya. I’ve never ridden an inline 4 tuned for midrange either, so at this point, I’d be loathe to say it’s exactly like a twin power delivery. maybe similar, but maybe still not the same range. couldn’t say.

I kinda agree with budd there… I would think hawaii would have some seriously nice backroads to ride on. Anyhoo, welcome and have fun in the MSF.

ParticipantYup. got that. the gsx650f, while replacing the katana, is basically a bandit mechanically. Still, being a complete noob, stay away from it. It is heavy, about 100lbs heavier than an sv650 and it’s an inline 4. IIRC, it doesn’t have the same linear power distribution you’d get from *-twin bikes, so goosing the throttle would be a real concern. Just search youtube, there’s plenty of examples of throttle goosing from noobs learning on their buddy’s inline 4 bikes… None of them turn out good.

Participantthe sv650 is actually a standard bike. The sport version would be the sv650s or sv650sf (2008). I’m going to disagree with WeaponZero. If you’re a complete noob, go with the 250cc bike. Despite what other’s may have said before, the extra 60+lbs. does make a difference, especially going at real slow speeds. Starting out, the ninja 250 is definately a more manageable bike. Everyone learns at different rates, so it’s always better to err on the side of caution. Take it from a guy who started on an sv650s, who’s ridden a buddy’s ninja 250, and who’s dropped his sv650s twice coming to stops in front of cagers. It’s pretty embarrassing. Not saying you’d definately drop your bike if you started on a bigger bike, but again, being a complete noob, you definately don’t know. Always stack the odds in your favor. Learn first, wish later.
