ParticipantI was just sharing some stats that I thought were surprising in favor of us riders. Am I over-analyzing? Didn’t mean to push the bounds.
Elias
ParticipantAh Munch, I can always rely on you for constructive criticism, and I appreciate that. My point (about what you quoted) is that HID’s give you better visibility to other vehicles. IDK about you, but my rear view mirrors don’t usually grab my attention peripherally. Sure, I look at them every once in awhile to maintain my situational awareness, but HID’s have a much higher contrast against what you are used to seeing at night (or day) in your rear views. When I see HID’s bouncing around in a mirror or in front of me, they ‘pull’ my eyes over to see what it is, because it’s obviously not an every-other-vehicle halogen lamp. This gives me confidence that HID’s attract the attention of everybody, and I want that (for safety, not personal attention).
As for the modifications needed, you are right, I have done my research. I am fully informed about all the mods that HID’s would require to operate safely and efficiently. I just wanted to know if anyone else at BBM felt the modification was worth the gain in attention, or if anyone else noticed HID’s on the road like I do. If nobody notices them, no point. I’m curious for safety purposes.

ParticipantOh man this gets me so excited! I cant wait to get my 650R. How does the power of your 250 feel? I have ridden 250’s and they feel…sluggish to me…but maybe thats because I feel confident on two wheels
Elias
ParticipantDon’t mean to sound like a stalker, but I’m going to be following your progress. I am getting my first bike in a few months so I’m interested what I can learn from you between now and then. Keep updating us as to your progress!
Elias
ParticipantSweet, can’t wait to try it on, thanks!
Elias
ParticipantSounds like I will be saving $200 (as compared to the Icon Domain 2 I was looking at) and just get the HJC IS-16. I’m sure their DOT sticker is legit, and it sounds like Snell standards actually apply more deadly G’s to my head in a crash…so save some money, and get a softer helmet…win win for me and my wallet!
SCR- Will the sun visor that pops down allow room for glasses? I have heard that it does, but I would like to hear your take.
Elias
Participant“Uncommon” might be bad word choice…maybe I should go with having an accident is a minority
Elias
ParticipantYep! I understand the risk. OBVIOUSLY motorcycling is more dangerous, but the stats show that if you are a smart and safe rider with a sturdy foundation of skill, you’re chances of wrecking are slim, and your chances or dying are even slimmer. Because of all the negative feedback I’ve heard all my life (biased, weightless negativity with no first-hand evidence), I just had the blind impression that motorcycling will take you down hard. These stats have opened my mind that accidents are dangerous still, but uncommon (especially if you are in the right demographic)…and that feels good to know.
Elias
ParticipantYep, I would definitely get some projector housings if I went HID, so that I could cut off the beam at a certain height. Otherwise, instead of getting the ‘flickering’ effect, I would just be blinding everyone!
Elias
ParticipantHaha, somehow I knew some other comparative stats would eventually pop up. AZ is a dangerous place to learn to ride in, but I’ve accepted that after living here for 23 years. I think what we need to focus on is that X.X% or riders are involved in fatal accidents and how we, as responsible riders, can avoid increasing that statistic.
Elias
ParticipantI completely agree. One might argue that the pedestrian stat is taken out of context. I just thought the data was interesting, I had no idea that more pedestrians died in 2007 in AZ than motorcyclists. It just put everything into perspective for me. I’m not arguing that riding a bike is safe than walking, I’m just posting the numbers. I agree with you, how I ride is more important than how the statistics rode at the time of their crash.
Elias
ParticipantWow, I’m really impressed by the feedback! I have always been told that Snell does all these extensive tests…that Snell goes to stores and buys helmets off shelves to re-test them…that Snell is safer, Snell, Snell, Snell. Now I’m hearing the opposite from third party tests? Well, should I just accept that any helmet is going to protect my bucket if it has a DOT or Snell sticker on it? There isn’t really a ‘safer’ helmet? I will try to read through those articles!
