AParticipant
I’m 1/2 from Philly.. near K of P.. where are you?
AParticipantI bought dozens of those also, my dentist friend goes on those “dentist without boarders” trips to south America, the headlamps goes to teh patient after extraction.. which happens to 80% of the patients before we run out of headlamps.
AParticipantPersonally, I carry as little as possible on my body when I’m riding, every bag or luggage is attached to the bike, not my body.
Buy a box of 100 pair of foam earplugs for $17.. shuve 5 pairs in yout tailbag or backpack.
Rotate sitting on your thighs when your rear gets tired.
I’m 5’10”, 150 lb. Ninja 250 would not be my choice of bike for long highway jaunts.
Lowering the gearing on a 600 sportbike will likely make it accelerate quicker at legal speed, which may or may not be safer for someone unfamilar with sportbike handling.
Look into Suzuki Bandit 600 or Yamaha FZ6, upright riding position, more wind protection..
Used Bandit 600 could easily be found for under $3000.AParticipantMore than likely the LEO pulled you over for something else, just mentioned the LED lights that he’s trying to cut your break for moving violation.
If your summon does not involve points on your license, I’d just pay for the fine and move on.AParticipantHuman hearing normally fully developed at age of 7 and deteriorate from that age. I try to preserve my hearing as much as I can since I am an musician. Earplug at all time, even in the shower.
AParticipantChinese bikes are going to catch up sooner or later, they have come a long way in a short time.
I don’t have experience with Chinese made motorcycles, but I bought a 250cc Chinese Scooter back in Mar 2008, other than it looks cheap and body parts seem fragile and lower quality build. The little scooter has been doorknob relaible, regularly get over 80 mpg, cruises nicely between 40-55 mph (according to GPS).
I perform all the maintenance on the scooter, most if not all the maintenance have been very easily performed, oil change takes 15 minutes and less than 1 qt. of oil, valve adjustment can be performed roadside 5 minutes, while engine is running at operating temperature with a single tool and pair of latex gloves. For a vehicle that cost $1699 deliverd to my driveway, $45 to insure per year, I’ve put over 8000 miles on it since I bought it, and other than blown fuses and flat tires, it has never left me stranded, even those were fixed roadside.
I think to really take advantage of a cheap, lower quality build vehicle, you should be mechanically inclined and have some tools ready in your garage. I have been riding motorcycles since 2001, I never thought a scooter would be for me, I tried it and love it. For my 10-12 mile one way backroad commute with speed up to 50 mph, the scooter has been most reliable and entertaining. The lack of shifting/clutching and the large amount of underseat storage makes it a better vehicle for my daily commute in stop and go traffic.
I am an avid cyclist, I even figured out a way to carry my bicycle and gear on the scooter, so I could burn less fuel when getting myself to those group rides:All in all, I think Chinese vehicles deserve a try, but be mindful that you need to be mechanically inclined and know that these machines are not as well made as major brand vehicles. A little bit of “crab shoot” may still involved; don’t expected them to perform like the major brand machines when pushed to the limits, as long as you stay well within their designated purpose, most likely even a Chinese vehicle can last a while.
AParticipantWith you frame of 6’1″, 190 lb. seems to me you shouldn’t have problem with reaching the ground while sitting on the seat for most motocycles.
Not sure if you are going to buy new or used moto, but used SV650 is hard to beat, if you’re looking to buy new, you could try a Suzuki Gladius.
AParticipantI’m 5’10”, 140 lb. I ride a bicycle approx. 6-8 hours a week…
Besides the Ninja 250, there are plenty of options depending on whether of not you plan to take long trips (+2hr) on highways; if so, 600/650cc displacement might be more versatile.
Also depending on your budget, 2001-2005 Suzuki Bandit 600 would likely be the least expensive at around $3000. 99-02 Suzuki SV650 could be found around $3500. Older Suzuki GS500 are also good bikes for cheap if you can find them.
AParticipantIt’s all in the right wrist, throttle control.. learn on a dirt bike first.
July 21, 2009 at 7:34 pm in reply to: Wanna be new rider asking for help with his first motorcycle purchase #20835AParticipantNinja 250 is a bike for smaller stature riders, at 6’4″, SV650S is probably a better fit than a Ninja 230.
If you are worried about the forward leaning riding position, look into a 00-06 Suzuki Bandit 600, they are more upright and cheap to find used.
AParticipantWhat’s you budget for a moto?
How much riding do you plan doing?
Mostly California highway riding? If I was 240 lb., i’d look for something 500cc or above for the least.
July 16, 2009 at 8:06 pm in reply to: SV650 > FZ6 –upgrade, lateral change, downgrade, or what? #20689AParticipantDo not confuse the FZ6 with newer FZ6R.. neither one should be categorized or compared with Kawasaki ER-6n and Suzuki SV650/Gladius, since both Yamaha bikes have 4 cylinder engine..
Switching from 2 cylinder engine to 4 cylinder engine bikes.. you’re likely to require more shifting, since the 4 cylinder engine tend to generate less torque throughout the engine rev range. If you’re not used to reving the engine at high rpm to get the torque/power that you’re used to get from your SV650, the FZ6 might seem a little anemic at lower rpm range and get a rude awakening once pass certain rpm range.
Really, how often do you see yourself reving the engine beyong 10,000 rpm (or 7000 rpm) in city traffic?
Added weight/width of the in-line 4 engine configuration is something that you might notice at slow speed maneuver, they are not as nimble as SV650…
More fuel capacity=more weight.
If you’re looking for budget, comfortable, in-line 4 middleweigh bike.. 01-05 Bandit 600 can be easily found under $3000 or even $2000; they have rock solid engine, more lowend torque than FZ6, less maintenance (no radiator).
Personally, I feel that liter class 4 cylinder engine bikes are better suited for street use, since they have enough lowend torque to avoid constant shifting, better power/weight ratio..
AParticipantGood on you to see it through.
I’ve always wondered what type of physique is suited for ideal firefighter.. bulky muscles to break down doors and carry trapped people out of danger.. or skinny muscular type that have less chance of getting trapped with large lung capacity to conserve oxygen intake and consumption during firefighting?
AParticipantI didn’t say riding with a passenger is a good idea for him, I said make sure he has a extra helmet for his passenger. You know his going to carry a passenger when he’s on campus, regardless of what we tell him..
AParticipantBike purchase could be similar to education purchase.. Do you spend 80% of time study, 10% party and 10% chasing girls?.. or more like 20% study, 40% party, 40% chasing girls..
Make sure you get an extra helmet for passenger.. which ever bike you decide. -
