Hey, Ben. Thanks for the video–it’s sobering to learn of people’s crashes. Your video said you’d be out of commission for 2 months. Does that mean you’re back on the road?
wbsprudelsParticipantMy worst ride was a couple of weeks ago with the temperature at 16. I hadn’t ridden in a week and wanted to get my Blast out. The roads were dry and I have decent warm weather gear. I calculated that the 5 mile stretch of Indiana SR-37 had the wind chill in the neighborhood of -40. By the time I got home, a couple of my fingers were white (on the road for a total of 15 minutes). I don’t plan to try that again until I buy heated gloves. Since I only have been riding since October, I am looking forward to rides that are too hot, rather than too cold.
wbsprudelsParticipantAfter reading the review on this site, I bought a pair. I have worn these in the office with black jeans, and they work great. I like the feel on top of the foot for shifting. I don’t know how well they protect in a crash, but I have been very happy with their riding performance and wear in the office.
January 31, 2009 at 10:38 pm in reply to: Ok, 600cc is not the best bike for a beginner, but what about 500cc? #16189wbsprudelsParticipantThe Blast is 500cc and is a beginner bike (with a review on this site). I love mine and am glad it is my first bike.
wbsprudelsParticipantI was the one who bit it in my class. I was first to try the quick stop from 2nd gear and grabbed a whole lot of front brake. As a result, I went flying over the front of my bike. No real damage to me or the bike, fortunately I was athletic enough to land on my hands, feet and roll. However, it scared two of the other students enough that they dropped out.
wbsprudelsParticipantI would recommend not buying a bike prior to the class (unless you find a great deal that you are afraid will get away). The class will help teach you good riding practices. If you have never ridden on a motorcycle prior to the class, then you will not be trying to unlearn bad habits. I had no bike experience prior to taking the class, and had no trouble with the class.
wbsprudelsParticipantI actually have not had that experience with the HD dealership where I bought my Blast. It’s a small town, family-owned type of business that is frequently checking in with me. I am on a first-name basis with a number of the employees.
It is the only reason I am hesitant with planning to buy a Suzuki M50 rather than a Sportster.
wbsprudelsParticipantYou may be lucky enough to take the MSF class and test ride the Ducati Monster 696 bikes at the same time. The December issue of Motorcyclist highlighted a MSF course being taught solely using these 696’s. The class in the article was at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut.
wbsprudelsParticipantyou wrote: “At the same time, I am thinking just moving to a little “higher” powered bike might save me money becuase I won’t outgrow it so fast. Lots of people seem to want a bigger bike at 6 months or so…”
I think some people misinterpret outgrowing a bike and wanting another with the fact that many riders claim that the perfect bike is the next bike. Part of the fun of motorcycling is dreaming about the next bike.
wbsprudelsParticipantI actually look forward to the weather warming up, so my wife will ride with me again. So far, among the highlights of learning to ride a motorcycle was the bike date my wife and I enjoyed back in the fall–a 15 mile jaunt to a BBQ restaurant while the kids stayed with the grandparents. It was beautiful!
wbsprudelsParticipantbought my first bike in October last year: 2009 Buell Blast. Despite the Indiana winter, I’ve logged more than 2700 miles on it. Love my new hobby!
