ParticipantI wrote 1 paragraph and was taken to task 1 word at a time, otherwise I would have let it slide, so don’t tell me I bent your words. Why on earth indeed, in a beginner motorcycle forum, refer to a bike by a cutesy, endearing name and assume all would understand what make, size and model motorcycle you were referring to. Walk into the local dealership and ask them to show you a ‘Sporty’, just as I did yesterday, and they will walk you straight to the H-D 1200 Sportster.
I have no problem paying for quality anything, but don’t try to sell me 40 year old crap and carry on like it’s great and should assume so because of the logo. “Busa peeps” …there you’re doing it again ! everyone new to motorcycles that knows what that is, hold up your hand. …enough flames for me, my apologies to the OP and others for getting sucked into that, if you Still need the last word Munch, be my guest. With a single piston brake…very sensitive brakes are what you get, in addition to: uneven brake pad wear, increased lateral stress on wheel bearings, uneven wear on the disk (chatter) and dismal performance in wet conditions.
Multi piston disk calipers apply pressure far more effectively over the entire surface of the brake pad, release more effectively, require significantly less pressure at the control and throughout a range of operation, facilitate far better brake control. Any brake can lock up a wheel eventually, including a stick through the spokes. The idea is not to slide the tire, skidding is loss of traction and results in loss of control.Personal recommendation to new riders: Do not accept paying 10 grand for a 600 pound motorcycle, manufactured in 2010 and equipped with 1970 brakes, no matter what stickers are on the tank or how cool the clothing line is.

ParticipantSorry, I could find no reference on the linked site to “butt jewelry” ; re: “As the author himself says the trade off between “butt jewelry” of the customizers and the performance constant upgrades of sport bikes riders for more power and speed are at best even.”
Perhaps you’d best take the sport bike “high volume of fiberglass aesthetics” criticism to another thread. …and be heedful there, the K100RS is wind tunnel designed to have the lowest, rider on, wind drag coefficient of any production bike in the world. …do you figure if I bob all the fiberglass aesthetics, she’ll loose that excess weight and go faster ? Or is my engine too light and overpowered ?
also; you say… “A Sporty would not be a good ( all though not inconceivable) good beginner bike due to how heavy it is (amazing for how tiny it seems) and the nature for which it was designed.”
… because you seem to be struggling here to define what a Good Cruiser class starter bike is& BTW, what “Sporty” are you talking about, the 883 at $9,289.00 cdn. plus tax, or the bigger one. Not that it matters since both have a two piston single front disk and a single piston rear brake !!! …Single Piston Rear Brake, WTF !!! … just what is “the nature for which it was designed” if not ‘excess’ profit ?
…Single piston rear brake, my Montesa Trials Bike brakes would be a major upgrade to That “big pimpin” design constraint !!!TrialsRider
Participant“If bobbers were about the bare essence of a motorcycle, choppers were all about wretched excess”

ParticipantI can’t shoot left handed worth a damn

ParticipantHow can you beat a bulletproof motorcycle that changes rear tires, license plate and rearview mirror while still in motion. Throttle that can be operated with either hand and the pièce de résistance: a rider that can perform a one handed 180 stoppie while simultaneously firing a handgun gun.

ParticipantFound this page After I wrote my comment, by google searching “motorcycle Cruiser excess”
please read; http://www.flamesonmytank.co.za/Cruiser.htm then tell us how far off base my comment was.
…and there’s nothing excessive about ape hangers, rightTrialsRider
ParticipantVintage, Sportbike and Brand specific Rallies are a blast, they give you the opportunity to meet others with a common interest, but limit your commitment of regular time and financial involvement. Competition events are still my favorite thing, On any Sunday

ParticipantMaybe a more appropriate analogy would be, what kind of horse does he ride a Pinto or a Belgian
Good Cruiser class starter bikes are difficult to even define, because Cruisers really are all about excess. Equipment developed in 1930 to 1960 America with a riding position inspired and popularized by the chopper, the formula is a total cash cow for both bike manufacturers and insurance companies. Cruisers have little to do with performance, features or R&D, and everything to do with ‘the Look’.

ParticipantAnd now you nearly have one ! BTW. give it some time, my wife really loves my dog now
just don’t drive her crazy with it, she needs some time to see how it keeps you occupied and makes you happy. Whatever you buy, learn it inside out, keep it spotless and enjoy it totally.
Bikes aren’t like old cars, they won’t get covered in rust and go to crap, save up a few old tooth brushes, they work great for cleaning in around all the tight spotsTrialsRider
ParticipantIn most parts DOT branded tires are a requirement for road certification. 250cc is almost a defacto standard for off-road, they offer an excellent balance of power to weight and suited to entry level off road competition. For experienced riders and road riding beyond city and rural roads, large displacement singles are far better suited. The current model 450cc singles, given tire, gearing and suspension modifications, even make an excellent platform for GP style road racing. see: http://www.450gp.com/EN/

ParticipantMirrored or tinted shields are great in the daylight and look awesome, but !
…I was caught out one cold, dark, rainy, poor visibility night wearing a 50% grey tint shield and swore I would never do it again, it was downright dangerous and too cold and wet to ride with the shield flipped up. I wear only clear shields now with small bug eye sun glasses under, unless there is no chance that I will be out until after dusk. That’s one powerful big, shiny rocket ship you have there, be mindful that it’s a race bike with lights. It will accelerate, stop, change course and catwalk, faster than you possibly imagine at this point.
