“If bobbers were about the bare essence of a motorcycle, choppers were all about wretched excess”
Quote from: Billy Lane’s How to Build Old School Choppers, Bobbers And Customs (2005, Motorbooks International)March 31, 2010 at 3:54 am #25316MunchParticipantComparing bobbers to choppers…. no he is not wrong.
March 31, 2010 at 1:32 pm #25322JackTradeParticipantI noticed that too. I guess they don’t get many of them down there (“.za” is the suffix for South Africa).
March 31, 2010 at 2:58 pm #25324eonParticipantSay it with the accent. Zouth Afrika.
Saudi Arabia got SA for some reason.March 31, 2010 at 7:12 pm #25329TrialsRiderParticipantSorry, I could find no reference on the linked site to “butt jewelry” ; re: “As the author himself says the trade off between “butt jewelry” of the customizers and the performance constant upgrades of sport bikes riders for more power and speed are at best even.”
Perhaps you’d best take the sport bike “high volume of fiberglass aesthetics” criticism to another thread. …and be heedful there, the K100RS is wind tunnel designed to have the lowest, rider on, wind drag coefficient of any production bike in the world. …do you figure if I bob all the fiberglass aesthetics, she’ll loose that excess weight and go faster ? Or is my engine too light and overpowered ?
also; you say… “A Sporty would not be a good ( all though not inconceivable) good beginner bike due to how heavy it is (amazing for how tiny it seems) and the nature for which it was designed.”
… because you seem to be struggling here to define what a Good Cruiser class starter bike is& BTW, what “Sporty” are you talking about, the 883 at $9,289.00 cdn. plus tax, or the bigger one. Not that it matters since both have a two piston single front disk and a single piston rear brake !!! …Single Piston Rear Brake, WTF !!! … just what is “the nature for which it was designed” if not ‘excess’ profit ?
…Single piston rear brake, my Montesa Trials Bike brakes would be a major upgrade to That “big pimpin” design constraint !!!March 31, 2010 at 11:13 pm #25332MunchParticipantThe fiberglass aesthetics was not a dig at sport bikes, rather an example between the two differing bike styles. Anyone who has read anything I have had to say on this forum knows I am not biased one way or another towards cruisers or sport bikes. So as far as that goes we’ll leave that be. There was no struggle at all in what I was saying only the way in which you decide to try and bend it. Why on earth would I refer to the 1200 cc version on a beginner bike forum?
Your initial post of excess was originally about ..Style, personality or whatever we agreed to disagree on. Now your trying to revert it to price tag. In which case. We could both carry this debate on for years on end. Name one bike on the road that wasn’t designed for said profit. My point originally being is that “excess” is just as bad as one side of the coin as it is the other.Sport bikes -you have the ‘Busa crowd with the stretched out high volume chrome custom painted fairing or even the non ‘Busa peeps with the repli racer kits. On the cruiser side yes with the “butt jewelry” you will also find the said custom paint jobs and raked out front ends. As with pipes for both styles. So as to which bike is in excess….. depends on the ones you are comparing. And no you will not find it in the article you linked as I stand on my thoughts and knowledge on the learning of my experience, not the ideas thrusted by others with the need to feel like I have to have them back me up.
March 31, 2010 at 11:25 pm #25334SantaCruzRiderParticipantYou can likely ding the Sporty in a number of areas, but upgrading the rear brake will provide little benefit. I always found the rear brake to be very sensitive and gave more stopping power than the suspension could handle. Even if you beef up the fork and front brakes, you’re still unlikely to find that the stock rear brake is lacking. It may seem so on paper, but I found it was plenty up to snuff on the road.
As an added benefit for the Sporty, while the rear brake was powerful enough to introduce me to several opportunities for rear wheel slides, the low center of gravity and neutral balance helped ensure that all ended in upright stops.April 1, 2010 at 8:39 am #25341eternal05Participant…got oil $$$$, anyone?
April 1, 2010 at 2:41 pm #25346TrialsRiderParticipantI wrote 1 paragraph and was taken to task 1 word at a time, otherwise I would have let it slide, so don’t tell me I bent your words. Why on earth indeed, in a beginner motorcycle forum, refer to a bike by a cutesy, endearing name and assume all would understand what make, size and model motorcycle you were referring to. Walk into the local dealership and ask them to show you a ‘Sporty’, just as I did yesterday, and they will walk you straight to the H-D 1200 Sportster.
I have no problem paying for quality anything, but don’t try to sell me 40 year old crap and carry on like it’s great and should assume so because of the logo. “Busa peeps” …there you’re doing it again ! everyone new to motorcycles that knows what that is, hold up your hand. …enough flames for me, my apologies to the OP and others for getting sucked into that, if you Still need the last word Munch, be my guest. With a single piston brake…very sensitive brakes are what you get, in addition to: uneven brake pad wear, increased lateral stress on wheel bearings, uneven wear on the disk (chatter) and dismal performance in wet conditions.
Multi piston disk calipers apply pressure far more effectively over the entire surface of the brake pad, release more effectively, require significantly less pressure at the control and throughout a range of operation, facilitate far better brake control. Any brake can lock up a wheel eventually, including a stick through the spokes. The idea is not to slide the tire, skidding is loss of traction and results in loss of control.Personal recommendation to new riders: Do not accept paying 10 grand for a 600 pound motorcycle, manufactured in 2010 and equipped with 1970 brakes, no matter what stickers are on the tank or how cool the clothing line is.
April 1, 2010 at 11:44 pm #25353MunchParticipantLast words…. nah you said enough. I’ll agree to disagree on your assessment and interpretations of what I said and reflections on how you feel about cruisers. No worries man. I take nothing personal and if I ruffled any feathers…. well glad to see your still alive enough to get ticked.
Granted that we both disagree on most any point between bikes and varying things debated. I will still tip my hat to ya with respect partly for standing your ground… and mostly for the type of motorcycling that is your hobby. I enjoyed rock crawling and such in my Jeep and could not imagine it on a bike.
April 2, 2010 at 5:12 am #25358Sean_DParticipant… thought I am very sure it is just an April Fools joke. The writeup for the movie Clutch and Chrome (supposedly starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt) says…
“We’re hoping this movie can show the intense rivalry between those who ride cruisers and sportsbikes”
and..
“The public seems to think it’s the big guys with the dirty leathers riding the chromed cruisers who are the tough guys on the road,” he says, “when in reality it’s the guy on the Ducati that rules the roost. I mean think about it, have you ever seen a Harley rider mess with the Mohawk on a sportsbike rider’s helmet?”

April 2, 2010 at 4:02 pm #25363briderdtParticipantClutch and Chrome brought up nothing on a search on imdb.com, so I’m thinking it’s nothing but a (bad) April Fool’s joke.
April 2, 2010 at 11:23 pm #25381MunchParticipant……””With production starting today, the movie is expected to be in theatres exactly one year from today on April 1st, 2011.
Editor’s Note:
Now that Aprils Fool’s Day is officially behind us, we can confirm the above was written to celebrate the day of trickery. The story only exists in our minds with the inspiration coming from some wishful thinking, mixed in with humor and a dash of sarcasm thrown in. None of the names (real or not) have any such project in place (that we know of) and we thank them for letting us use their likenesses in our celebration of a unique day.
Because our readers are having so much fun with the story, we’re keeping it up, but understand it is entirely a work of fiction written to entertain!””

April 2, 2010 at 11:40 pm #25382Sean_DParticipant… I was very sure it was an April Fools joke, but it had potential in some sort of weird Motorcycles meets Deliverance kind of way
