ParticipantCongrats on having a successful class! I’ve done the same thing before in regards to the stop sign, but once you experience more of them, you get a lot better at it stopping before the bar. Plus if you take the same route everyday, you know which stops have a limited view that requires you to move forward to get a better view. One thing I had trouble was with coming to a stop at a redlight in the right turning lane. I would have the habit of slightly turning right before I stopped completely and I almost dropped the bike.
It sounds like you guys have the better structure for the class up there. Dont get me wrong, I learned 90% of what I know about riding from the BRC, but I was still hesitant about getting on the road the first time, even with hours of practice by myself. I think if they could have worked in some road time with the instructors, I would have been feeling twice as confident.

ParticipantOr get a lovely pair of frame sliders..

ParticipantYeah, I would definitely be afraid of dropping my own bike, so I probably wouldnt commit 100% to the technique…where as on the MSF bike, I would go all out because it’s not actually MY bike….plus as you said, it’s a lot lighter and easier to control. Kind of like going from a mountain bike to a BMX bike…

ParticipantI agree, the MSF class is a blast! Congrats on your success!
My class didnt have an actual on road portion…we just had the skills evaluation and the written exam, how exactly did the on road portion work? (ie what were you graded on, what was the set up, etc.). I’m just curious because I would have liked to have done that myself in my class.

ParticipantThats so awesome man! I must admit I’m a little jealous!

ParticipantBut you did it because you wanted to..because that was going to make your motorcycling experience what you wanted it to be…thats what its all about. You dont buy a bike to eventually sell it, you buy one to ride the hell out of it and have a great time!

Participant+2 to the newer-ness
The 650r is my first new bike and it’s comforting to know that youre the only one that has handled the bike. Plus the EFI is totally sweet, my last bike was a zx6 with a carb…needless to say, i was using the choke alllll the time. With the EFI, it automatically adjusts itself to the proper setting and gives it better mpg (not that im comparing a 4cyl to a 2 cyl, i just mean in general). If youre lucky, you could get a GREAT deal on a new 2009 that a dealer is trying to get rid of to make room for the 2010’s.

ParticipantI have a 650r and I love it…I’m about 210 and it still has plenty of juice for another passenger. It has a pretty standard riding position and it isnt too heavy, so it would be easy to handle even with another passenger. Its a very torquey bike, a good balance of sport riding and commuter riding.

ParticipantMine was probably a day or two after I got my bike…
Yes, riding at night is different than in the day, and yes, it requires more focus and attention, but in my honest opinion, its not that bad. But you shouldnt do it unless youre already comfortable riding in the daytime. I ride at night every day coming home from work.

ParticipantThanks, I definitely like it. Eh, I’m not worried too much about other buyers…I just bought it myself and I dont plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. I’m going to modify my bike in the ways that I want, potential buyers be damned. I’m just starting small because I dont have a lot of experience working on bikes. I dont think you can buy a bike and automatically think about re-selling it. It’s not like one of those shows where you buy a house, fix it up, and turn around and sell it haha. When you put your time, money and effort into a bike, you do it because YOU want to. Thats how I feel anyways.. lol

ParticipantNew pics with the Targa Fender Eliminator, Ermax Seat Cowl, Gipro-DS Gear Indicator, and Tapeworks Reflective Rim Tape.
I installed everything myself, which is pretty good because I dont have alot of experience working on bikes. I think it looks 100% better than stock…let me know what you guys think!

ParticipantI live in south GA so its high temp high humidity for 8 months out of the year…I wear my mesh jacket for about 5 of those 8 months…
Side note: I saw a guy on campus who hopped off of his SV650 wearing Columbia shorts and loafers!! I debated on whether I should have punched him in the face or not… unfortunately, I decided not to…
ShamRock229
ParticipantSeriously…The MSF class taught me pretty much everything about riding. The majority of people took Driver’s ed when getting their regular license, so why wouldnt you want to take the “driver’s ed” for motorcycles? You cant beat what you pay for 1)learning how to ride safely and effectively 2)getting valuable experience in a safe environment 3)waiving the DMV test 4)the experience itself (the instructors and other students are awesome, and when you finish, you really have a bond with them)
Most people say the DMV test is harder than the MSF class anyways… theres really no reason not to take it.
