I caught it, only because I saw the video over a year ago. c.c
RidleytheRedParticipantHaving just started myself, I’ll tell you what I’m experiencing.
When I took my MSF course last year, we all rode 250’s. They’re nice and light, easy to manuver and fun for the course. A 250 is definitely a confidense builder if you’re just getting started with riding or it’s been a long time.
I just got a ’82 Yamaha XJ650 which is a bit bigger than most of the starter bikes that are mentioned on this site, however the power is a definite must if you plan to take long trips, live in hilly/mountainous areas, or need to keep up with traffic on the interstate.
A 600 or 650 should be fine if you can handle a bike that’s about 400lbs. I looked at a 900cc bike a month ago and the extra weight is really noticeable, but the 650 I could handle just fine. The factors that will help you choose the right size for you should be what you feel comfortable handling. If you’re bigger a medium sized bike could be just fine, if you’re smaller start smaller. There’s no one who will call you an idiot for knowing your limits, you might get teased by squids or fools, but they are a minority. My friends at work go riding as a group a lot and you’ll see all sizes in their pack and no one gives grief to the falks with smaller bikes.
As far as cruisers go, most of the Yamaha’s I’ve seen have tachometers, but you can tell when to shift pretty easily by sound and intuition.

RidleytheRedParticipantGloves, boots that go up to your ankle at least, along with Spaz’s suggestions.
RidleytheRedParticipantI’ve had pretty good responses so far from other riders. The only time I’ve not seen people wave was when they were at standstill or one of us was turning on a curve. in other words riding safely. Everyone I talk to likes my Yamaha so far.
RidleytheRedParticipantThe story is a little vague. it says he was drinking earlier that day instead of specifying that he did right before he rode. I’m not really defending the the guys for riding like fools, but because of the poor writing it’s possible he wasn’t drunk if he had time to digest the alcohol.
RidleytheRedParticipantOutstanding comic.
RidleytheRedParticipantThere’s really only a couple shops in town, no official dealers so to speak. If I want that, I’d have to go to Denver. I didn’t realize he had sadle bags for the bike before picking it up yesterday so that took care of one thing I was hoping to buy. I’d love to get a smaller windshield like this one in Poland.
Take a look.RidleytheRedParticipantYou should see them in wintertime here. They come to live in the mountains, think buying an SUV will save their butt, then either end up on the side of the road because they can’t stop a 3 ton vehicle on ice or driving worse than my grandma on a sunny day.
RidleytheRedParticipant33,000 on the odometer, about 3-4,000 since the new engine was installed. The tank is new or repainted with sparkly red paint. Got it and a junker for parts for only $800.
RidleytheRedParticipantThanks, they have a lot of nice stuff there.
RidleytheRedParticipantI need to get the seat cut back a couple inches to get more comfortable. Right now I sit like I’m on a crotch rocket. Otherwise It’s really comfy.
RidleytheRedParticipant1999 Chevy Monte Carlo
RidleytheRedParticipantI live in Colorado Springs, CO.
RidleytheRedParticipantYep, I took my MSF course, and learned all my lessons the easy way so far.
I got all my gear long before ever getting the bike as well. Though I may need a better pair of gloves. I do like the ones Ben is using currently so I’ll see about getting a pair myself.
