I got the Haynes manual for the GS. It covers everything you need to know. The Clymer is also highly recommended…

Yoshimura makes probably the best slip on for the GS regarding sound and power, although not the cheapest. Adding a slip on does not require a rejet, but it is recommended (even on a stock bike). Jardine makes a full system for a pretty good price.
If you you want more power, add a k&n lunchbox and rejet the carbs. Check out gstwins forum, it’s got all the info you need.
    There’s also a GS500wiki.

I too am interested in a track school. I’ve been reading up on “CLASS”, a school ran by Reg Pridmore. They run classes at Willow Springs which is the closest track to socal. I can’t find any negative comments regarding them and they seem to be the best out there.

It’s an 05 that I bought a few weeks ago. It’s a great bike with plenty of power to get me to where I want to go.
I’ve already put on about 300 miles since I got it.

Look in your local ads and craigslist. You’ll find some great deals on bikes that are in really good condition and with low miles.
I bought a used 05 Suzuki GS500F. It’s a great bike with plenty of power and great for commuting. The Ninja 500r is also a good and popular choice. Kawasaki also makes the Ninja 650, which a lot of people rave about.
    Good Luck

Congrats on the bike. I pretty much have all my gear, just need to find some riding boots that I like. I got all my stuff from newenough.com. They got great prices and the shipping is fast. I’ve just been riding around my neighborhood after work.
I might hit up a parking lot this weekend to practice. Still have a few weeks till the msf class.

I narrowed my choices down to the GS and the ninja 500. I don’t like the dated look of the ninja so I was leaning more towards the GS. I scoured the local ads and craigslist and found this 05. It only had <1300 miles and was completely clean, no scratches and never been down. The guy was asking for $4K, but I got him down to $3300. He also had the extended warranty till 2011!!!
    I think I got a great deal.
