+1 again to Eon about covering the controls and weaving a little.
Another thing that one of the instructors mentioned is standing on your pegs. This makes you bigger for one, and it is something unexpected that may get drivers’ attention and let them know you are there. Not always possible, but I have found it effective on a couple of occasions.
gitchy42ParticipantLooks pretty sweet to me
gitchy42ParticipantI have a pair of Tourmaster overpants that I have lost the fly on. I think I bought them one size too small. They feel like the fit right while I’m standing, but when I sit things get a little tight, especially when I am wearing jeans under them.
gitchy42ParticipantIt might be posture and/or riding position. You really need to use your back muscles to keep yourself up or your hands (or other parts) will go numb. Although munch might be right, did you have a death grip on the bars??
gitchy42ParticipantOh God that’s a pretty bike…
It was a 1980 custom (if I remember right), but it was a little ragged, and he was tired of working on something that never did quite work right.
gitchy42ParticipantI have Pilot Road 2’s and a friend has the BT023’s I love mine, and he’s on the 4th set of his.
The newer sport-touring tires have ridiculous life, and nearly as much grip as similar pure sport tires.
gitchy42ParticipantI’m still here, just got too busy doing other stuff. A Bandit would be nice, a bit different than the other bike though…..
I helped my dad deliver his CB750 to a coworker today, he was showing a little bit of seller’s remorse on the way home.
gitchy42ParticipantFunny that you talk about riding more down here, cause I was wanting to ride more up there in Washington, but there are a lot of fun roads left in Oregon that I haven’t even gotten near.
gitchy42ParticipantI second MadJak’s points. Buying used will save you a lot of headache later, although you may still be able to find a good deal on a new 2008. Window shop a little to get an idea on what you can expect to pay, work out how much you are willing to pay and when you go to buy DO NOT GO ABOVE THAT (unless you completely fall in love with a bike, then fudge it a little).
Also, Jeff has a great suggestion with taking a rider training course. In most states the MSF course is a good choice, some states have their own training course. Most of the time the course will replace the ride test, sometimes the knowledge test too. In every case a rider training will lower insurance rates.
You have chosen a couple of great bikes there, but don’t overlook the older Ninja 250’s, they don’t have quite as good performance as the newer ones, but they are the gold standard for newbie bikes.
Enjoy!!
gitchy42ParticipantNice Ride!! When we tried to go up there most of the roads were still closed, or had miles of gravel. As always, dig the video…love the B52’s soundtrack for this one!
gitchy42ParticipantNice Look, Great sound! Hope you enjoy that one
I remember something about your wife saying you might as well upgrade to a bike you will ride a while, this would definitely be in that vein!
gitchy42ParticipantYeah, I wouldn’t go out in that either….
gitchy42ParticipantMaybe start carrying a hammer with you, and next time someone gets close enough that you “could have reached out and slapped the car, maybe even his face”, use the hammer??
I agree that MOST times, when you are moving, you have to be next to or ahead of someone for them to hear you, however I have been ahead of some Harley’s, going 70mph and could hear them coming. Although, I bet a lot of people might have thought there were some low flying aircraft in the area.
gitchy42ParticipantHi Anthony,
Have you considered the GT250-Comet? It is the naked version of the Hyosung GT250R. The advantages of the ‘Naked/Comet’ is a slightly more upright position and no plastics to f-up if you happen to drop it. Just a thought….from all of the reviews I’ve seen and read the Hyosung’s performance is similar to the Ninja, but the build quality isn’t quite up to par. However, I have seen one up close, and thought that it’s a pretty sweet looking bike, and all of the controls are pretty much where you would expect them. Kinda wish I had taken it for a ride now…..
gitchy42ParticipantI think that Jeff ion Kentucky has a good point that the jacket would probably make you sweat a lot. Also, he’s probably right that it will work if you buy armor to go under it. However, I think that it would be best suited for traveling at low speed (<35~)
If you want to go lower cost I would suggest getting some riding jeans and some armor. They weigh less, protect better and cost about the same as carharts.
