My Pants have failed me – again

No, I haven’t laid it down, or fallen off. I just seem to keep breaking the zippers on my pants. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good synthetic all-weather (sun, rain, freezing cold) overpant?

My current pair are Tourmaster Calibre pants – they were recommended to me and I’ve seen plenty of riders happy with them. I got them last November, I replaced one leg zipper a few weeks ago, and now that one is unhappy again, the other leg zipper is bust, and the waist liner-overpant connection zipper is bust too. The only one that’s still intact is the fly. Is it normal to have $200 motorcycle pants blow up after a year? Admittedly, I commute all year and run around town exclusively on my bike – the pants have probably made around 400 trips – but that still seems awfully quick. Has anyone else with these or other pants had this issue?

My last pants, Fieldsheer mesh overpants, also blew a zipper after only 8 months. Is it me? I’m not particularly rough on them, but I don’t want to have to baby my gear until I take longer getting dressed than I do riding. I do take them on and off over my boots, because I’m gearing up and down in a university parking lot. Thoughts?

I’ve worn a pair of Rev’it overpants since June ’09 about 6 days a week with no problem, but the only zipper that gets used daily is the fly. I almost never use the leg zippers since I put on/take off my boots (change to regular shoes) before the overpants. I only put in/take out the liner once a year as the seasons change. I can see lower quality zippers being the weak link if they’re used all the time.

The zip broke on my Tourmaster Flex pants after a year but they were subjected to undue pressure (hey, they were a small!)

I’ve had Rev’IT pants for 12 months and a jacket for 18 months and had no problems. The jacket gets worn about 6 days a week, pants maybe 1 or 2. I also use the leg zippers each time I wear the pants as well as the zipping them to the jacket. The webbikeworld guys make a big deal about zips on jackets/pants and always point out when a company uses something like YKK. If Rev’IT is not your thing I’m sure there are other brands out there who use quality zips.

I’d recommend Olympia Motosports Airglide pants. I’ve been wearing a pair as over-pants for 2 hours of commuting, 4-5 days a week for years. I’ve crashed in them twice and they’re still okay!

They’re cordura with mesh panels and have removable windproof/waterproof liner pants, so can be used year round.

They zip all the way up the leg, although I usually only zip/un-zip them to the knee.

They’re more expensive than some others, but they’ve been money well spent as far as I’m concerned.

I have a pair of Tourmaster overpants that I have lost the fly on. I think I bought them one size too small. They feel like the fit right while I’m standing, but when I sit things get a little tight, especially when I am wearing jeans under them.
