kirkParticipant
West Texas riders get to ride most of the year. It doesn’t get really cold till about December and even then we can still ride. It is rare that we see snow or ice here.
kirkParticipantWow! That is a lot of work but it doesn’t seem like it’s out of this world. The only problem is that I don’t have a paddock rear stand. I guess it is time to start looking for one online. Thank you so much for the info.
kirkParticipantThanks for the feedback. I tried a size L ICON helmet last week and sure enough, it was super small! The large fit me so tight it gave me a headache. Suffice it to say I ordered an XL which arrived last Friday. It is snug but not so that it hurts. Hopefully it will stay that way. Thanks again.
kirkParticipantWhen you say that you clean the chain, does this mean you remove the chain or can you clean it without removing it? Is there any cleaner that is reccomended?
kirkParticipantI’m not too crazy about the group rides either. I’ve done a few where they are just going too fast and I just tend to hang back. It is pretty cool when we are together and you see a group of riders in their colorful bikes and gear but I prefer to ride alone.
kirkParticipantAfter riding a GS500F for a year I made the jump to a Honda CBR 1000RR. Before I made the purchase I questioned myself if I was ready for such a drastic change but it turned out to be a great move. I had confidence in my riding ability but I was initially intimidated by the big ole CBR. It took me about a month to get used to the power but I was careful and didn’t go beyond my abilities. I soon got confidence and I’ve been riding my CBR for two years.
Some riders may disagree with my drastic change but it worked for me. You have to assess your skill level and definetly be comfortable with your riding abilities. Good luck to you.kirkParticipantI also use a Xena lock. It was a bit pricey but I think its worth it. I agree that tying the bike down is one of your best bets but that is not always an option. Besides my Xena brake disc lock, I also use a U shaped lock to tie my bike down to a solid object.
kirkParticipantMan that looks like fun. Wish I had a track like that here:(
kirkParticipantWow that is some beautiful riding. By the way, I rode this last Saturday is it was a chilly 106!!!
Who does that version of the song you use in the video? Thanks.kirkParticipantHahaha! That was great!
May 27, 2010 at 12:56 am in reply to: What would you have done differently buying gear in the beginning? #26749kirkParticipantI first purchased a Joe Rocket jacket with my first bike. My criteria was the reasonable price, cool look and basic lack of information regarding safety.
Well it has been four years and that first jacket is still with me and in perfect condition. I have since purchased a second JR jacket and I also have a pair of JR gloves. The quality has been excellent and the price is hard to beat. I am a satisfied customer and I will continue buying the brand.
Have I been lucky or has the brand improved from several years ago?kirkParticipantVery good points from every one but I have found that buying a motorcycle is different from buying a car. I have purchased 3 new cars in my life. With all 3 autos I was able to negotiate successfully use some of the tips listed here. I was well informed and got some great deals.
With the 2 bikes I’ve purchased (Suzuki GS500F and Honda CBR) I have had no room to negotiate. The dealer in both cases said that the price was firm and they would not lower it. They wouldn’t even throw in a helmet or some freebie.
Keep in mind I was polite, well informed, wasn’t asking for a massive discount, didn’t appear desperate and I was not set on walking out of the dealership with the bike. As I said, with auto purchases I was able to negotiate, with bikes, no dice.kirkParticipantWow! Yet another example of the continued erosion of our rights. Sure the guy was speeding and he deserved a ticket but the officers actions were beyond belief to me. If I’m riding my bike/car/walking/whatever and some car cuts me off, guy gets off with a gun and comes towards me…what do you think my reaction will be? I’ll either try to run away or defend myself.
Secondly, what did the officer think the camera on top of the guys helmet was doing?
The erosion of our rights is seen in the DAs actions. Charging a guy for filming the incident? I’m glad to see that their state has the time and funds to come after a guy that filmed a police officer acting out of line. Recently in my town there was an incident in which a police officer arrested a film crew at the scene of an accident. The crew was filming when they were told they had to move. The film crew moved but kept filming as they walked away. A police officer followed them and ordered them to stop filming. They still kept moving away as ordered but protested that they were journalists and had every right to film the scene. The officer became furious, pushed them and eventually arrested them. Suffice it to say that the officer was eventually suspended and his case is pending.kirkParticipantI went ahead and ordered the lock from Motorcycle Superstore. They seem to have a generous return policy in case it doesn’t fit. I also went on the Xena website, thanks mhl, and found that they do indeed have a section that lists what bikes the lock will fit.
Finally, I live in the southwest by a border. Stolen cars and bikes here are as common as rain is in the northwest. I personally know 3 people that have had thier bikes stolen in the last couple of months. I know that there are no devices that will stop a theft 100% of the time but I figure I will make it as hard for them as I can. I try to lock my bike down to an inmovable object but this is not always possible. For now I will use the brake disk lock in conjunction with a u lock. Thanks again all.kirkParticipantLeather is just too hot. I know that leather offers a bit more protection but here in the southwest it is WAY TOO HOT! Most guys here just dont wear a whole lot of ptotection due to the hot temps. Mesh is the way to go here.
