Maybe it is an industry you or someone you know may want to start up there. It sounds like you would stay busy. It sure cuts into your weekends though.
Jay TParticipantWas trailering what he cold get from Denver last year. Seems like no one here is getting them. I did find one of the new style (2008) in Casper Wy. on Craigslist. He must really need the money he is only asking $2800 and it has less than 1k miles on it. He did say it has some cosmetic blemishes. Even then it hasn’t been on the road enough to get mechanical problems. I had thought about going up there to check it out (about 3.5 hours) but, I got an 1976 XL350 instead.
Jay TParticipanttry to get you out on a test ride. That isn’t always a bad thing. You get to try out other rides. Kinda scary when you have to go home and say something like “Honey, I know we talked about not going into debt for a motorcycle, but…” If you are treated badly at that dealership, you just go to the HD dealership 20 miles down the road. Them things are like Walgreens and Wal-mart. They are everywhere and they ALL have help wanted signs in the window.
Jay TParticipantare butt men. Legs, hell I got legs. Sorry, a sick movie reference there. The Vulcan is also a fun ride. They ALL are, really. I just picked up an ancient XL350 for summer commuting. Not so big as the 650, where I would be tempted to ride it on a road trip instead of the HD. I have never really looked into maintenance cost of the Blast. It is a HD derivative and as such, you should be able to take it to a non-dealer shop. That may make the maintenance cost a little lower. Try them all, even the dorky looking ones. Never know where you will find that nugget.

I’m hoping perhaps I can get OTD to lower the price a bit, 1k over msrp.Good luck with that. There are people standing around dealers like groupies for the little Ninja. The dealer here doesn’t have any and they are not seeing any soon. They are taking after HD and taking $250 deposit for the next PINK one that arrives to go to the next person on the list. I am not sure any dealer is cutting prices on this hot ticket. Check Craigslist. I have seen a few 2008 for sale now and they don’t seem to last long. The right one will come along.
Jay TParticipantYou should be able to find 2yo SV650 all over the place for around $3k-3500 unless you wait to late in the season, that will go up a little and the SV is the JAZZ.
Jay TParticipantand put in a max price and see what you come up with. Remember the old mini bikes with the Briggs motors on them. GOD what a blast. If you are flexible, (read up to $1k) you may be able to find a bike that is titled and can be plated. 9 acres + trips to the store. You will be finding excuses to run little errands for your honey.
Jay TParticipantdoesn’t have to be done all at once. Swapping a CB over to cafe is not that big a deal. You are not doing anything with the motor. The swap ends up being more about handlebars and sheet metal. It would not be that expensive to have someone do it for you. You wouldn’t need to have a professional shop do it either (although some of it you may want to have a shop do). Find a local group of cafe riders and get in with them. If you are sitting at your local Starbucks and see someone pull up on the bike you would like, start a conversation. You can’t be bashful. Google Honda CB cafe racer and see what forums you come up with. I usually like the ones that are on the 5-10th page. Get that CB350-550, clean it up and ride it. Next winter, it will give you something to do while you are jonesen to ride.
Jay TParticipantYou can get them a couple of years old for around $2k-2500. Most of the time they have very low mileage. In a season or so when you have more money saved, you will be able to get most of your money back out of the Blast. The 500cc will drag two up, unless you likem big. Get into some dealers and take all sorts of stuff out for test rides. Even if you think it is dorky looking, it may really be the ride of your life. The other motorcycle I am seeing a little of would be quite a bit older Kawasaki KLR650. What a FUN ride that is.
Jay TParticipantdoes make my heart go pitter pat. I end up scrolling back to the top and then back down to read then back up to the top to look again.

When you put them in water they swell up and stay that way for a long time. I think armored mesh with a cooling vest in hot, dry Az. would be perfect.
Jay TParticipant1. Don’t let it happen first place.
2. Scream obscenities the whole time it is falling in slowmo, pose next to the motorcycle for the Kodak moment, get the motorcycle back on it’s stand and get out the pliers and duct tape to get me to a shop or home, get out the credit card.Jay TParticipantI am looking at Craigslist this week. I am going to purchase a 250 Ninja or a dual sport. The big thing for me is price $2k is my break. I did find an older KLR 650 for around 2500 and a real cool 1984 Honda XL 350 with less than 3k miles for just over $2k. I am really leaning toward the dual purpose BUT, 2008 Ninja less than 1k miles (down once) $2800 (Casper Wy. Craigslist). or the 2004 Ninja 736 miles (you heard me right) $2500 (Denver Craigslist). I am just anxious to see what comes up next.
Jay TParticipantI always tell guys that they should start out by telling their sig other (or your Mom in this case) that you will be taking the course. I have one friend that has promised her Mom that she would always wear a helmet and has always followed through with that. Bring up the gas prices (they will be over $4 again this year), easier to keep on campus, lower insurance rates… fill in the blanks. I did hear something earlier in this thread, your Dad will be a great ally. You may have to show them both some responsibility. That is a big deal between parents and 20 somethings. This will sound really lame, make sure your grades are up. Start saving the dough to purchase your first motorcycle CA$H. So you may have to work the job that will give you the money to live at school next year AND some extra toward your motorcycle. Keep some pics around of the motorcycle you will likely buy and your dream motorcycle. That will get her used to the idea that you will be getting a motorcycle. You may want to grab some MSF info and fliers and have them laying around, too. There are my suggestions.
