Vented Mesh Jacket or Cooling Liner Under Leather Jacket

Over summer I’ll be going back to Temecula, CA. Its a little bit inland and summer highs are regularly in the high 90s and occasionally low 100s. I will also be making 3 or 4 trips to Phoenix, AZ, where 100 degrees is a nice cool day.

I’m trying to decide whether to get an evaporative cooling liner to put under my leather jacket (Alpinestars ATL) like this:

or the other option is to get a really well vented mesh jacket like the Scorpion Cool Rod or Shift Airborne.

    Any ideas/opinions?

seems like a good idea, but all of the extra airflow would dry out the cooling liner really quickly… defeating the purpose

I have no experience in those kind of conditions but from everything I’ve read the evaporative cooling liner is the better solution. I would imagine that would be a huge pain for every day riding though. Sorry I cannot be more help but my decisions are more along the line of winter glove or heavy winter glove.

I have been riding with mesh for the past couple of years and I LOVE it. I even crashed in a HD mesh last year and it protects about as well as denim.

So are blue jeans something that would not protect the skin on the legs (or the butt) very well?

Eddiepowerfm: jeans are absolutely not going to protect the skin on your legs at 20+mph. I lowsided in jeans going about 40 and tore my jeans up and got a little bit of road rash on my knee/upper leg. That was over 4 weeks ago, and the road rash finally starting to go away. I’d stay away from jeans if possible, however I’ll admit that I still wear them sometimes as long as I know I’m not going near the freeway.

Back to the topic, I don’t think you guys are getting what the cooling liner is. It’s the kind you dunk in water for 5-10 minutes, ring it out, and it will stay cool for 5ish hours.

I’m thinking about going with the mesh jacket (Scorpion Cool Rod) for running around town, and getting the cooling liner for the 5-6 hour rides to Phoenix. As Eon pointed out, it would most likely be a huge hassle to use cooling liner every day.

A friend was riding her new bike home, hit some loose gravel in a curve doing less than five mph, and still managed to scrape her leg up. Not terrible, but it wasn’t her favorite thing either. She was wearing a proper jacket, but only had jeans on her legs.

    Riding pants are awesome.

I will start looking on-line and at some of the area shops for something to wear with my mesh jacket.

Kind of a vest affair that was kind of quilted with those pellets that they put in diapers these days. When you put them in water they swell up and stay that way for a long time. I think armored mesh with a cooling vest in hot, dry Az. would be perfect.
