I live in MN, so when I start rinding in the Spring it can be as low as 30 in the morning. By Late July into August it can be 90+ in the afternoon. Right now I just use my friends spare gear. It’s ok in the hot summer months, but just doesn’t offer enough when cold. Also, I rarely ever go on the freeway. The 250cc just scares that hell out of me at those speeds. So if I’m not going over say 55 mph (mostly 30-40 mph) Would textile with a removable liner work best? I’m just trying to avoid buying 2 sets of gear. I’ll have to invest in my own stuff once my friend sells his bike (which I have also been using), and have to buy my own bike. What about pants? Would those Kevlar jeans with removable knee and hip armor be a good choice? I really like the sound of those. I’ve also seen “chino” styles I would probably wear too.
ziberzabaParticipantI’ll be buying it in about 2-3 weeks. I’m waiting for my tax returns to deposit. Dealer is holding it for me, they are just awesome; even giving me $500 off because I’m a new rider. I’ll be getting the G5 Classic in British Racing Green. I’ve been all over the forums for the REs and I’ve read almost every post pertaining to the G5 model. I am going to treat it like a baby for probably the first 2000 miles or so. It has a long break in period, but I have no problem making it even longer.
ziberzabaParticipantWell, I was looking at getting the Suzuki TU250. It’s a nice little thumper, and you can get it in any color you want as long as its red. I was looking at a Royal Enfield in British Racing Green, and just wanted to paint the Suzuki that same color. However, I did my taxes last night, and pretty much hit the jackpot. Now I have a down payment available that makes the Royal Enfield cheaper than the Suzuki (when you add in the price to have it repainted), so that’s what I’ll be getting. But yeah, check out the TU250. It’s a fun little bike, but I found it cramped at 6 feet tall. And the seat leaves a lot to be desired, I could feel the frame under the seat at 195 lbs. But overall it’s a fun bike for city cruising (highways would be about the scariest thing EVER!), just don’t expect to be on it for more than an hour before you need a new bum. Plus, you’ll have to buy it new, as 2009 was it’s first year in the US, but it’s still only $3,799 fresh from the dealer (plus fees) I just found the Royal Enfield to fit me better, have a little more power, and infinitely more comfy; at $5995 that’s still pretty good for a new bike. Both have EFI singles, 5-speed, and that classic styling. However, the Enfield is twice the cc of the Suzuki.
ziberzabaParticipantHoly, thanks for the awesome info! I’m not entirely sure what bump start is. It sounds like a drop start, so I’m gonna guess it’s the same thing (starting the engine with the transmission). The weird thing is that this bike has both a functional kick start and an electric one as well. So I don’t know if that would remedy that problem. How hot was the ambient temp to boil the gas? In Minnesota we rarely have days above 100. Maybe 2 tops a year if we’re lucky. Most of the summer is spent in the upper 80s with a couple weeks in the low-mid 90s. I’ll probably go with the EFI from what I’ve read. I’m not changing altitude often, but I’m not really into cleaning my carb every spring when I bring the bike out of storage. I just wish I could find a used one. No one seems to want to get rid of theirs. So I will have to buy it new, but it falls within my price range. They also have relatively cheap OEM replacement parts should I drop it, and there is no plastic to worry about. Thanks again for the info. You’ve made the decision that much easier.
ziberzabaParticipantWhat would everyone think of a royal enfield. I sat at on one a show today, and have to say it fits perfectly. Every 250 I sat on was just too small, my knees were easily above the tank on every single one. Then I found the G5 Classic. It’s a fuel injected 500cc, perfect height for me, and the classic look I wanted. The best part is; even if I drop it, any replacement parts are cheap and easy to come by. Am I thinking a little too large for a 500 as my first bike. I talked to a couple of the new ridder coaches at the show, and they said it would be a good bike even for a novice rider. But I want to hear what you guys think. Has anyone ever ridden one?
ziberzabaParticipantWhat would everyone thing of a 1978 Suzuki 550? Would that be too big? It has the same style as the TU250X but is actually old. Maybe even the 450? But I don’t think that the 550 would be too big for a beginning rider. But I will definitely welcome your thoughts and opinions.
ziberzabaParticipantThat would explain my difficulties.
ziberzabaParticipantNo, I’m in Minneapolis, so we’ll get the show the following weekend. I have a 32″ inseam, so I’m not sure where that leaves me. My biggest debate is whether I want to buy the bike new, or just get another 250 used somewhere. I just really like the look of the bike. I’ll be sitting on a few at the show, so maybe I’ll find something affordable that fits me.
ziberzabaParticipantThanks guys for all the recommendations for my first bike. I’ve been doing a lot of shopping online, and as of now I’m looking at getting the Suzuki TU250X. The International Motorcycle Show is coming to my area next weekend, so I’m gonna have a sit-see on it there. Has anyone heard anything about this bike? It’s the style I’m looking for, the right size for a beginner, and from online reviews; it will easily fit a 6′ person and reach 80-85 mph. The only problem is that I can’t find one used anywhere, even though it’s not that much new… But still. Thanks again everyone!
