I’ve got enough money in boots already, so I plan on just using my work boots. They may not be “motorcycle” boots, but they’re comfy and they’re tall enough for some support, so why not. Got ’em here
http://www.lapolicegear.com/blwawedeopsb1.htmlMedicParticipantYup, that’s the stuff. I think a person would almost be foolish NOT to put some of that tape on their bike somewhere. I mean, you can’t even tell it’s there until it serves it’s purpose right? Kind of a no-brainer. And a very cheap way to improve safety.
Now that you mention it though, I think I may go with something different for my helmet too. I know I can get a reflective strip made to go on our helmets for training, and I think one of those would be MUCH brigher. Pretty much what you were talking about. If I come up with something clever I’ll post it up.
I just ordered a Scorpion Vision orange vest too. Now that I look at them more I kinda wish I would’ve gotten the yellow one because they seem brighter, but oh well, should work fine. I’m all about being seen at night.
Now I have everything except the pants…and a bike haha
February 17, 2009 at 4:49 am in reply to: Heads up to tall-ish guys looking at the 2008+ Ninja 250R #16554MedicParticipantMan, those 250 Ninjas sure are sweet looking bikes though. I almost wish I was into that kind of bike just so I could have one. But I’m just not a ‘sporty’ guy. I think I’d be fine too, at 5’8.
Good post though, I’m sure it’ll help some potential buyers out alot. Very well put together.
MedicParticipantI’m all over the place looking for bikes right now. Craigslist, ebay, cycle trader, dealerships, everything I can think of.
It’s good I’m not ready to buy right now, gives me time to really see what’s out there. I found a used Rebel for $1800 too, and a couple others. We’ll see what happens.I’m just glad there’s forums like this to help me keep my head on straight haha. I tend to get excited sometimes. I thought I was gonna grow out of that, but it just hasn’t happened yet. Hey but that’s a good thing right?
MedicParticipantHaha well I’m still not completely decided yet, but I have been leaning toward the Rebel based on input here and on other sites.
I’ll know for sure once I take the BRC and see how I do and what I think of actually riding one.
I’ll definitely keep everyone posted though.
Right now I’m just going nuts buying gear. Helmet, jacket, gloves, vest, etc. (The vest is required on post, got a Scorpion Vision, nice).
The mail room guy is gonna think something’s up with all these packages coming in haha.MedicParticipantSo along these lines, I was thinking and ended up buying black reflective tape from ebay. Since I ordered a black helmet, I figured it’d be a great idea to improve visibility at night without messing up the look of the helmet.
And for about $6 I should have enough for the helmet, maybe my jacket if I can get it to stick, and probably a few strips on the bike somewhere. Not sure if anyone else uses this, I’d be interested to hear if anyone has had success with it. But hey, if it doesn’t work, it was only $6. Worth a shot IMO
MedicParticipantSome great info there, and a well thought out post. Thanks for the information, I wasn’t real sure what all this CE stuff was about. I’ll need to be more careful when choosing my gear now that I have a better idea of these standards.
As a Nurse myself, I can tell y’all first hand that road rash and other motorcycle injuries are no joke. If you’ve ever had a wound debrided, you know how painful that can be. Depending on the size, extent, and location of the wound, it may need to happen quite a bit more than you’d probably like. And as was said, the risk of infection is very high with alot of road rash. One of my patients actually became septic and died.
We learn every day. I for one am glad I can learn some safety tips here before I learn them the hard way with inferior gear.
MedicParticipantAbsolutely, I agree with you 100%
The jacket I just bought has these little reflective pin stripes on an otherwise all black jacket. Not gonna do it.
For my money though, I’ll throw a hi-viz vest over whatever I’m wearing. Serves the same purpose, and it’s much more versatile. When I get off the bike I can just ditch the vest and I don’t have to be a stand-out anymore. Works for me.
MedicParticipantActually, I’d like to see that pic. It’s work safe for me.
I worked ICU briefly for school, and one of my patients did die from a motorcycle accident. He was pretty messed up, and he wasn’t the only guy in the ICU for the same reason at the time. Actually we had several, and I think 2 of them didn’t make it. And I was only there for a month. So nevermind the picture, ever SMELL a necrotic thigh? I can tell you, it’s not a pleasant thing. That guy died when they tried to amputate his leg actually.
All that said, I’m still not big on leather pants. And chaps? Hahaha, not so much, just not for me. I agree with the lack of protection there, too.
I need o get to a bigger bike/biker store so I can try some things on and see what works. I know how important it is, but buying stuff I’m not going to wear is pointless and a waste of money. I’d rather spend more and get it right the first time. So back to google to find a local place.MedicParticipantYou got a deal on a new one?
I gotta know how you did it. I’ve been looking at new ones since I can’t find a used one here, but I don’t know how to get the price down. So how did you do it?
MedicParticipantStill can’t commit to leather pants though, I’ll stick to blue jeans until I find something more um, subdued?
MedicParticipantYou guys just keep impressing me haha.
Really though, I just ordered a jacket and some gloves from leatherup.com
We’ll see for sure when they show up, but they look pretty good and the prices were very reasonable.Thank you
MedicParticipantWell good to read that people here know what’s important.
I’m from Milwaukee, WI, home of Harley Davidson. Lots of cool bikes to look at which is cool, but most people just don’t seem to think anything bad will ever happen to them. Or I guess it’s just not “manly” to wear a helmet on a Harley. WhateverI haven’t even gotten my license let alone a bike yet, but I just bought a HJC FS-10 helmet and now I’m looking for some more gear. Jacket and pants seem hard to find unless you want bright colors or advertisements, but I’ll find something.
Stay safe
MedicParticipantHaha I’ve never been good at taking my time with things. I generally get an idea and just go for it. Which explains the Mustang too (I need a black 5 speed GT, and I need it NOW!) haha.
But maybe I should hold off this time. I’ve come to realize how little I know about motorcycles and like everyone has said, I haven’t even taken the safety course yet. I keep changing my mind between the Rebel and something else, so I guess I should be more ‘solid’ before I buy.
I think I can take the written test to get my learner’s permit, so I’m going to do that this week or next and then once I go through the BRC and get my license, I should have something figured out. And then I’ll be legal to ride my new bike home instead of getting a friend to bring it home for me.
Thanks for the help everyone
MedicParticipantOK, good points. Thank you for taking the time to explain all that.
I was actually just thinking how if I have to move, I could just toss the Rebel in a truck or something. Can’t really do that with a bigger bike. Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, thinking all my moped time is going to give me some kind of advantage. No sense in getting a “better” bike if I just hurt myself on it. And if I feel the need for speed, I always have the Mustang haha.Maybe I shoud stop screwing around and just get the dang Rebel. I just wish I could fine a good used one here. I see them all over ebay and found several back home, but none where I’m at. Oh well. I’ll just keep looking.
