When you decide you can finally ride to work for the first time this year, because it’s finally above freezing when you leave. One degree above freezing, but damn it, it was above freezing. Windy as heck, too, although not as bad in the morning as it was in the afternoon, when it was high gusty winds that made holding lane position next to impossible.
I work about fourty-five miles from where I live, so it was a long cold ride. I bought some PolarTex gloves from Alpine Stars, and they kept me pretty well for just over half the trip. After that, things started to get uncomfortable. Better than the cheap snowmobile gloves I picked up from Tractor Supply though.
I thought I was pretty bad ass too, until I saw a guy on a chopper with a skull cap. He looked miserable, but dammit, he was riding.
April 11, 2009 at 3:46 am #17686MunchParticipantI am in that nice middle point… only had to take maybe a total of 3 weeks out of my ridding. I can be wet… and I can be cold…but wet and cold I don’t do. If it’s above freezing I ride. It’s all about the layers.
April 12, 2009 at 4:31 pm #17695wbsprudelsParticipantI live in Indy and have put nearly 5,000 miles on my bikes since October. I ride to work if it’s dry and above 20. I tried riding below 20 and it was terrible.
April 13, 2009 at 2:39 pm #17717Clay DowlingParticipantAround here we had a lot of ice on the roads on most any day where it dropped below freezing overnight. A lot of that probably comes from the fact that I leave right around sunrise, which is the coldest part of the night. Typically the temperature is still dropping when I leave the house.
April 13, 2009 at 3:36 pm #17721Jay TParticipantI haven’t had the time to get my HD up to the shop to get the starter solenoid repaired. I just can’t stand the fact that others get to go out to play so I looked around and found a bike I can ride until the HD is worked on. I know, I know, I spent more on a different motorcycle than it would have cost me to have the HD TOWED to the shop up in Ft. Collins and have the work done but, I am a very right now kind of guy. I am pretty sure that around here you can get your money back out of old dirt bikes, just like you can get your money back out of old, junkie, rusty pickups. The HD will get pulled up to Ft. C over the next couple of weeks. At least I kept the CCs low on the dirt bike so as not to be tempted to start road tripping with it. I HAVE to repair the HD before the road trips start.
April 13, 2009 at 4:01 pm #17727Clay DowlingParticipantYou already know what it is, so I’ll leave it unsaid. Just mention that I had a very nice 50 mile ride to and from my parents house yesterday on my 12 year old Honda Magna. No maintenance issues at all.
April 14, 2009 at 2:29 pm #17744CandiceParticipantIt’s freezing in Illinois. Usually I ride in 50 degree weather which we had over the weekend but 50 felt cold just standing there in the sun so I didn’t take the bike out and now it’s in the 30’s. Well, it’s suppose to go up to 60 in a couple of days so I’ll take it out then, can’t WAIT!
April 14, 2009 at 3:44 pm #17746Clay DowlingParticipantgetting the good weather. The 50 degrees was cold when you account for the fairly stiff wind. Not as bad as Friday, when it wanted to blow me all over the road, but it wasn’t my favorite. I definitely needed my waterproof layer in my gear to keep the wind off.
April 14, 2009 at 6:39 pm #17753Jay TParticipantfor the past couple of days but, I still haven’t gotten my proof of insurance so I can get a plate on it. It is supposed to get cold and wet here again tonight or tomorrow. Soon, I hope, soon. I taught in the cold wet this past weekend. Yuck.
