I searched the forums and reviews and nothing seems to be for me. Im 5’10” 250 wider body frame, to be honest i have kinda short legs. Im looking for a good starter bike. i dont want to look like a wide load on a tiny bike though. I would prefer a sport bike over a muscle bike. The only catch is im looking for something that is not a “R” bike. I dont want the extra insurance cost that come with having a r bike. example is 250r or even the gsxr bikes, cant do it. so help a noobie out here please.
July 26, 2009 at 8:56 pm #20964briderdtParticipantThe 250r is NOT a race-tuned bike, and is NOTHING like the GSX-R’s, either in displacement, tuning, or even ergonomics. Don’t let the “R” in any bike designation scare you.
July 26, 2009 at 9:05 pm #20965JamesMSanDiegoParticipantI know its not a race-tuned bike but the R in the model classify it through insurance companies as a racing model motorcycle and the R in models make insurance go up for me so im looking for bikes that would be good for my height and weight porportion without a R
July 26, 2009 at 9:49 pm #20969MunchParticipantOther then reading reviews …have you butt tested any?
July 27, 2009 at 1:49 am #20972briderdtParticipantVarious companies will classify them in different ways. Mine (Safeco) goes almost completely by displacement, and are pretty forgiving until you get up to 1000cc. Have you asked your insurance company directly about this? And are you willing to switch insurance companies in order to support the one that actually uses real data instead of ignorant thjinking like “the ‘R’ means it’s a race bike”?
July 27, 2009 at 5:45 pm #20991JamesMSanDiegoParticipantRight now i am with horace man insurance for my car. they do not offer motorcycle insurance anymore, just asked. i am 20 years old, any ideas who i should go with then? for cheapiest insurance that is?
July 27, 2009 at 6:54 pm #20992MunchParticipantShop around…try the majors like progressive etc. , Geico usually is expensive then work you way through the ranks. Check out even moto mag websites as their adverts usually have motorcycle specific insurance co. in them.
July 28, 2009 at 6:24 pm #21011JackTradeParticipantAlso, where you live plays a big factor in price. I live in the mid-atlantic, and we pay a lot, no matter which company for insurance.
Progressive gets high marks, so try them out.
As for your bike, have you looked at the Suzuki GS500F? Sportbike looks, reasonable but not overwhelming power, inexpensive.
July 28, 2009 at 9:02 pm #21015eonParticipantYou live in the mid Atlantic? Isn’t that kind of err, wet?
July 28, 2009 at 9:12 pm #21018JackTradeParticipant…That I’m a squid?!
July 28, 2009 at 10:32 pm #21019eonParticipantLOL….now if only I had thought of that
July 29, 2009 at 2:42 am #21027JtownJJAParticipantProgressive AND the GS500F both get my vote. Oh wait, that’s what and who I have.
I was a good customer of Progressive for several years with my auto policies before I just recently added the motorcycle policy. They gave me a great rate with several discounts. No one else came close. And I think the GS500F fits the description of what you are looking for. For a sporty type bike, it is relatively inexpensive to insure.
July 29, 2009 at 8:26 pm #21048eternal05Participant…that you have a Kawasaki EX250.
July 30, 2009 at 10:02 am #21074Clay DowlingParticipantThe company I work for runs a call center for a number of insurance companies. They all swear by Rider for coverage and rates. Unfortunately Rider is not available everywhere (like where I live).
You should also look to see if your insurance offers roadside assistance. If your bike dies midway through a ride, it can be very useful to have somebody come pick you up.
You can also buy roadside assistance separately. Better World Club, for instance, will even run a gallon of gas out to you if you do something silly like forget to switch off reserve when you gas up. Of course, that’s probably not the route to take if you are trying to save money. But if you’re touring, that kind of coverage is good to have.
July 30, 2009 at 9:04 pm #21090JamesMSanDiegoParticipantI am going to be using it to get to school and back mainly. its pretty much all freeway driving too. its just going to be my first bike and im a akward frame and weight so i was looking into opinions and cheap insurance for san diego or southern california
