and hesitating to enroll in the BRC? I’ve always wanted to learn to ride and I respect the value of education and professional instruction, but everytime I look at my local MSF website, I hesitate and navigate away from the page, and everytime I check the schedule it’s filling up fast. Why am I being stubborn??
November 3, 2008 at 9:03 pm #14540CandiceParticipantSign up! If you decide the first hour you are on the bike you don’t like it, they respect your decision to drop out. Their view is that you learned you didn’t like riding a motorcycle and that’s ok. BUT, if you like it, you will be so glad! It’s a win win situation. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and I think if anyone has even an inkling of an interest in riding a motorcycle, they should take the class, it’s a really good experience. I mean, you might take the class, pass, and still decide you don’t want to ride, that’s ok too. I think you will regret not signing up, you’ll always think about it.

In my class about half of the riders had never even been on a motorcycle.. So there’s no reason to feel like you’re going to be the most inexperienced person there.. Half of your class will probably be in the exact same position as you… And let me tell you.. Some of the most nervous and horrible people at the start of the riding portion ended up by the end of the class being able to handle the bikes just fine and passing.. The worst part is getting over the nerves… To me I think that’s the key.. Don’t go in expecting to be perfect or thinking anyone expects you to be perfect.. Just go.. Learn.. And have fun… At the least.. You’ll get a better understanding if motorcycling is right for you or not.. At the best.. You’ll pass and get your license..

November 3, 2008 at 10:33 pm #14548Clay DowlingParticipantThe reason for the class is so you can drop out if you decide that motorcycles aren’t your thing. There were two people in my class who dropped. It’s a lot better to drop the class than to buy a bike and decide you hate it.
November 4, 2008 at 1:13 am #14551nau_lax21ParticipantI agree with the other posts. You should definitely sign up for the first class that fits in your schedule/budget. If you found your way to this site and made a post you do have at least some interest in riding a motorcycle.
Worst case scenario… you don’t like riding, you drop the class. You have peace of mind knowing that riding isn’t your thing and you’re not wandering about it.
Best case scenario… you like riding, pass the class, and pick up something you’re gonna love for a long time.
Best of luck either way

December 18, 2008 at 7:35 pm #15336japac1Participantand it was fun. I passed with no problem, however, I don’t like the figure-8 in the box. I am so glad I signed up. Now I have to decide about a bike and I really need a lot of practice. Thanks for all of the encouragment!!
December 18, 2008 at 8:46 pm #15337Clay DowlingParticipantEverybody hates the figure eight. It’s definitely the hardest part of the course, and it put my deductions up near the limit. The frustrating part is that it was just testing nerves. The night before I spent 20 minutes pulling figure eights that tight on my own bike.
They really do become easy in the field. The trick being not to think about it so much as just do it, and everything works fine.
December 19, 2008 at 4:02 am #15344fl adamParticipantTook the class last weekend in SW FL and loved it. Was worried up until the day we started. I would have done better if I just relaxed. Passed but would have done better if I wasn’t trying so hard…Now looking for a decent used bike…Sat on a Honda Shadow and VStar and liked both. Want to try a Vulcan 500 also….
December 19, 2008 at 4:42 am #15345MunchParticipantShame your not up here in NC… I just traded my V500 in… now including my old bike there is 2 in this area total.
Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h
December 19, 2008 at 11:47 am #15346fl adamParticipantWhere are you at? I used to live in Charlotte (for 17 years). Moved to SW Florida 4-1/2 years ago. Loved NC….Didn’t care for Charlotte though. It’s like a mini Atlanta…Too congested. That’s kind of funny coming from me, an ex NYer.
December 19, 2008 at 1:13 pm #15347MunchParticipantLOL…..don’t take offense….but being here in the Triangle area ( Raleigh). You cannot imagine how funny it is that your in Florida. For the few of us that are natives in NC our joke about how many NY’ers that are here now is that they are the ones that didn’t plan their finances far enough ahead to make it to Florida.
Yea I am in the Raleigh area, the dealership I will buy all my Bikes from is just off of 95 (should you stop through on your next trip back up north) In a town named Selma. If you’ve ever driven through NC its exit 289 (if I remember correctly)….can’t really miss it you will see signs for JR’s super outlet and cigar store ( yes its ok to laugh..I am in the south… ofcourse we have tobaccoa product stores) and the Outlet malls. There’s a Sheldon’s HD dealer there to. Don’t blame ya for not liking Charlotte.. wasn’t a fan either for the few short days I was there. Raleigh it seems is trying to compete…..which is why I remain a country boy and my ride to work is pushing 45 mins. These darned Homeowners associations keep popping up and these housing developments keep moving any closer……my drive will get longer.Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h
December 19, 2008 at 10:07 pm #15357fl adamParticipantI used to do outside sales for western NC and SC. The natives used to call me a “Halfback”. Someone who moves from NY to FL then moves halfway back. I was bacwards and went to NC first….No offense taken, I am pretty easy going. If I had a choice I would live somewhere in the Mountains of NC or Va, very pretty country up there…Been to the JR’s in Statesviille several times….Got a call back from the dealer wanting to do some dealing on the bikes I looked at yesterday. Want to try some other places first, they left a bad taste in my mouth…. This is a Great website, lots of good info and people….
December 19, 2008 at 10:16 pm #15358MunchParticipantGood luck! Tell us what you end up with.
