When I decided I was getting a motorcycle several years ago, I knew then I was getting a Ninja 250. Maybe it was as a kid, the more experienced (or older) you got on dirt bikes, the higher the CCs you got. I stopped riding dirt bikes at 100cc. When I was in the Army, my roommate had a 250 dirt bike that he had out one day and he let me ride it. That bike had so much more power (all low end torque, but I didn’t quite understand that at the time). I thought I was going to rip my arms off. I rode it for a few minutes and walked away a little more scared than when I started.
When I decided to take the beginners course and told people I was getting a motorcycle every single person I talked too said that the bike was too small, a girls bike, or that I would out grow it five minutes after getting on it (some actually told me I wouldn’t get anything out of the MSF because of my riding experience). You can only hear these things so many times before you start doubting yourself for wanting a smaller bike. Online, I would find some advice saying the 250 was a great beginner bike but it was usually followed with other people posting that a 650 is just as manageable or not to buy anything smaller than a 500.
Then I found Best Beginner Motorcycles. Someone had not only validated the decision I had made in my mind, but they backed it up with riding hints and reasons that starting smaller is better. All of a sudden I wasn’t alone in being a responsible consumer as the members of the forum were very supportive. I started understanding why other people were leading me away from smaller bikes. I started asking people if they had ridden the 250 Ninja. I haven’t found one person that has ridden it that has recommended against it.
I stick around because I still have plenty to learn. People post their mistakes and lessons learned here and I would rather learn from them than the hard way. I also hope to pass on some of the knowledge that I have (yes, some of it the hard way). There are several people here that I am sure I would get along famously with.
So, this is why I am here. How about you?

I am a cruiser person and there wasn’t good info locally about anything in that style… sport bike out the wazoo… cruisers not so much. After feeding in a search BBM came up in the results. Its how I found my bike… fortunately Ben had done a review on the Vulcan 500 . I was sold. Gladly I read more and more and even felt better about getting the 500 after reading that cruisers were “underpowered” in comparison to their sporty counterparts. So I stuck around read more… got to like a couple of ya and have been watching every since.
Now I look forward to seeing stories about adventures and rides and lessons learned. I also stick around due to the mature and reasonable nature of it’s members. Though sometimes some heated debates and jabs happen in the end after all the posturing…rarely for more then a day someone if not both sides come to terms to agree to disagree. The board moves on. This is a rare thing to find in any Forum.
Folks theres alot of good information on here… alot of points of views. This forum and group will have alot of good information at a constant and good insight from varying opinions as long as we all remember that each individual is entitled to their opinions….no matter how screwed up it….. just kidding.
Looking forward to reading alot about adventures as some of us continue to grow even out of the “beginner” status to atleast learned. Then we can all in turn help Ben help others as he has helped us.Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h

Basically came to this site to learn, and see what has worked for people who are just starting off. I’ll be honest and say that I truly feel that for anyone who is just getting started in motorcycling, ESPECIALLY if they haven’t bought their first bike yet, that this site is really one of the first places they should stop. I’ve found the wealth of knowledge and wisdom here to be beyond value… and the one thing that impresses me is that the people here are not afraid to call it as it is. I would say that if i really gained one valuable bit of information, and that is the need to reign in my expectations as a newbie.
Also gives me something to do until my MSF class in November!
