What is it about Harley Davidson?

I turned on the SPEED channel the other day and there is half hour program ‘reviewing’ some HD bike (the Rocker I think?). Now this review was nothing more than a 30 minute advertisement, there was no attempt to offer any critical appraisal of the bike. It was 30 minutes of non-stop lavish praise, leather clad blonde bimbo cruising around Hollywood, Big Sur highway and some canyons, rock music in the background. They even got some MotoGP guy to come on and tell us how wonderful the bike was along with some VP from HD (one of the Davidson clan).
Why is it HD gets this kind of program and others do not? Do they pay for these programs themselves or is it the SPEED channel just kissing ass? Now, I am not American so I do not entirely understand the whole way of life that HD has become, but I know it exists. But if I was into HD bikes I would still want to see critical appraisals of them, not just 30 minute infomercials.
Can someone explain to me how this works?

They have a special look and style about them that I haven’t seen the Japanese Company’s contend with. You add 105 years of heritage and you may answer your own question. As far as the SPEED channel is concerned. I agree that they should show an objective view in reviewing any kind of motorcycle. And personally, the Rocker is not one of the best in the line up in my opinion. The question I humbly place before you is, how much of those 30 min did you stay tuned in? : ^ )

They also are an United Statesian company, so some people by them out of national pride. Harley’s also cost a lot more so they are a status symbol of sorts. Harley also limits their production numbers every year. This creates a supply and demand issue that makes the bike more desirable due to the trouble in finding a new one.

History. For better or worse, riding has an image to some people that was developed over decades. It wasn’t challenged in this country until the Honda (“you meet the nicest people on a honda”) adds. Some like this image. Independence. Freedom. Mobility. This is a uniquely American company. Bikes are very customizable. Warranty and service, while expensive, are miles ahead of the Asian competition.
Unlike Europe and Asia, motorcycles aren’t especially practical in most of the US. We have longer distances, and need the ability to carry people and stuff. Riding is a matter of fun or attitude. You have to concede that H-D offers a certain amount of both.
Check out the August issue of Cycle World to see a neat H-D which you can only buy in Europe.

September 26, 2008 at 3:08 pm #12793megaspazParticipantmy beef with the speed channel isn’t the harley shows. i quite like them, especially the custom build shows. My problem with speed is that it’s all mostly car stuff and reality stuff like wrecked. the moto stuff they do have are mostly poser shows with very little moto gp stuff. the moto gp stuff they do show are all old races as well. for me, i don’t care for the car stuff or the wrecked reality show stuff. I wanna see bikes and moto gp races. after a couple of months watching speed, i don’t even turn it to that channel anymore. I get my moto gp fixes off bittorrent.

September 29, 2008 at 5:25 am #12934AnonymousGuestHarley Davidson is a religion to some (through some clever marketing), and those so afflicted are not interested in critical appraisal of their icons.
