So I have read that the vulcan is one of the best beginner bikes on the market and I do like it, and dont want to go any smaller do to the fact once i get use to city riding i will be using my bike for 2 to 5 hour trips on a regular basis. however I have also read into the shadow vlx and have seen alot of sites say that they arent much faster then a vulcan 500, that and they seem to be around the same weight however think the vulcan is a little longer in length. getting to the point, being as they are both the same price and from what i have gathered have around the same power does the honda vlx make a good beginner bike like the vulcan 500. only wondering because im into the style of bobbers and would like to convert whatever bike in get into one, that and i like to look of the the engine more (v twin or whatever still learning). im really just wondering if the slx is getting in over my head for a first bike.

The gearing is really tall (only 4 gears). It makes for a good bike to spend a few hours on.
I’ve read reviews that say the vulcan is the nicest small-to-mid sized cruiser for long trip comfort. It also has a different feeling power delivery from the other cruisers. Other cruisers (like the VLX) will develop a good push a low rpm, but it will peter down as the revs climb. The Vulcan (having a Ninja engine) will need to be revved a bit, and the higher the rpm, the faster you’ll accelerate.
My mom has the VLX, she loves it. A co-worker has the Vulcan, his only complaint is that it is a titch small for him (tall guy). Go with whichever you find more comfortable, they are both good bikes.

Since I’ve had the bike, I can honestly say that I’ve been extremely pleased with it and am so glad I went with the Vulcan. It has plently of power for freeway riding and is really smooth through the 6 gears. However, like you said, it doesn’t have that v-twin look, so if you’re if that’s the style you’re wanting, the VLX may suit you better. Just sit on both before you buy. I think you’ll be happy with whichever you decide.
