I still have a few weeks to go here, but I’m really excited and spend a ton of time window shopping on craigslist. I found a Honda VTR 250, http://raleigh.craigslist.org/mcy/727710040.html, it has high miles, but I mean, 800 bucks! I’m honestly thinking about trying to find someone who knows how to ride come look at it with me. I’ve seen that and a couple of older 500cc bikes and what not. I guess my only question would be what do I need to look for when I go look at these bikes?? Any obvious signs that might let me know if it’s been maintained or not? I really wanna wait till I get my endorsement, but bikes in the 250-500cc range are only getting more expensive out here in Squid City and 800 dollar deals really cause me to do double takes…

It looks like it’s been well kept from the photo’s. It’s my guess that they don’t have a use for it any more and just want rid of it. You can take a lot of cues from the person selling it and the way his/her house, yard, car, etc. is kept up. Ask lots of questions and ask if they have a stamped service record or receipts for service work, repairs etc. Ask for the handbook (for service data) as they might have it in the house somewhere.
If all seems well, you buy it, and it hasn’t been recently serviced, I’d take it to a dealer to have it serviced and safety checked.
Hondas are well made and usually very reliable bikes although as with any older bike, it might be hard to find spares.

June 22, 2008 at 3:39 am #7628dainus87ParticipantTell me about it! I think I’ll give the guy a call tomorrow after I get out of church. It’s so cheap I think I could get my dad aboard on buying it and get it straight cash. I had previously wanted to finance a cheaper used one through my credit union so I could get some credit (ha, mixed maturity=buy a motorcycle to get credit, irony). Any idea on how much room a ninja 250 takes up in a pickup?
Thanks Rab for the suggestions, it does look good for the age, and I didn’t know that it had the nighthawk 250. I will definitely ask for a service record and receipts. I was thinking myself, that, if it’s a bike, there’s no way it’d reach that mileage without some type of service or tlc. I’ll update you guys if I can get my hands on it.
