So I am currently stationed in Washington, D.C. and might be getting out of the Navy soon. I am originally from California and I had my truck, a 2001 Dodge Dakota, shipped here. During my stay in D.C. I acquired an ’08 Ninja 250R. If I didn’t have the bike I would just ship the truck back to save the miles but that’s not possible.

Does anybody have any expierence transporting a motorcycle in the back of a truck bed? What is the best/safest way to do it? What all will I need?

I transport motorcycles in the bed of my Mazda 2500 pickup truck a few times a year.
From Ninja 250s, Honda CBR1100XX to BMWs over 650 lb.

Here’s how I get the bikes on and off the truck bed:

Use the engine to walk along side of the bike to get it into the truck bed.

Usually, two ratchet straps are enough to secure the motorcycle, as such:

The secure points for the ratchets should be at the lower fork legs, not the handlebar.
Extra ratchet for the rear end should be attached on or near the swing arm not the sub frame.
