Hi ,
I am a total newbie to motorcycles. I have visited the dealer and was able to sit an a new 08′ 250r. I really liked it and have put down a deposit to order one that I will probably never get anyway. I just stumbled upon the 2008 Yamaha V Star 250 today online and researched it as best I could. Hopefully I will be able to find one in our area this weekend to look at and sit on. I realize that I am comparing apples to oranges here. I like the cool looks of the sport bike although I don’t like “Laying” down to ride them, That’s why I like the 250 ninja since you are only slightly leaning. I also found a set of handlebar risers for the 08′ 250r that will bring the bars up 1″ and back 1/2″ which would allow even more upright riding. The cruiser type bike like the V star 250 has it’s place in my heart as well. My Dad has two Harleys and my grandpa has one as well, so I grew up around them. I have never driven a motorcycle and am waiting to get a spot in the local MSF course before I ride. I just want to see if anyone has ridden the V Star and the Ninja 250r and could compare them for me. PS> I am 6″ and 229lbs if it matters. Thanks for your time!!!June 19, 2008 at 2:41 pm #7517gpr75ParticipantSo, no one has checked out the V Star 250? I know many folks have looked at the Ninja 250r.

I know nothing about the 250 Yammy. As always, chosing between a Ninja and any of the 250 cruisers is more about you than the bike. What type of riding do you imagine yourself doing? What image do you like? etc.

Top speed seems to be around 80 mph but it’s much happier at 60 or below. Gets really good gas mileage. I’ve heard that taller people feel a bit cramped on it. You’d have to try it out to know for sure. Chances are you’ll be riding something similar in the MSF class. Speaking of the MSF class if you’re having trouble getting in to one ask the dealer if he can help you out. The course providers usually hold out a few spots for the local dealers because they provide the bike that are used in the class.

June 22, 2008 at 5:14 am #7631gpr75ParticipantI did find an 08′ V Star 250 today and I took a look at it and sit on it. It was definitely too small for me as far as leg room. I am going with the 08′ Ninja 250r after much debate. I Went to the dealership to check on the Ninja order and still had no luck with it arriving yet. I did put another $750.00 down today to bring my total deposit to $1,000.00 on the Ninja. I wish it would hurry up and get here! The owner of the dealership had just put a new Ninja 650 on the showroom floor and told me to try it out. I sit on it and it was actually ever so slightly more comfortable than the 250r, although not enough to add another $3,000.00 to my first bike purchase. We also decided to stop off at the Harley dealer to take a gander. I fell in love with the 2008 Sportster XL1200 custom in the 105th anniversary paint scheme! The problem was the $11,000.00 price. I will hopefully end up with one of those after I learn on my new Ninja and get through the newbie experience. The dealer told me that he will be calling Monday on the Ninja order. He is going to try to locate me one and do a dealer trade to get it with some of his other inventory. He thinks they can get a hold of a Blue bike. I prefer red or blue and will not take black at any cost and green either due to the loud color it is. I will keep you posted on my progress. Thanks for a great resource for us beginners!
