WOW I am getting flamed on the Rebel boards LOL
November 4, 2008 at 1:27 am #14555MunchParticipantThey seem to be a tad upset that they lost a fellow 250 owner. Some of them seem to be more upset (in between the lines) that they haven’t yet got the nerve to step up, and others are just staunch fans. The guy with the tire wear pictures…… I’d laugh at him…..I have had my bike for 3 months ( Vulcan 500 for refresher) and my so called chicken strips make his look mild. I spend 90% of my time in interstate but ride plenty of back roads with twists and turns. I know the area you ride and its not “straight lining”
Don’t worry with their opinions…you know your skill and your comfort. Ride the new bike til the wheels fall off…. its not of their concern.Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h
November 4, 2008 at 1:36 am #14558Sangria7ParticipantI was just sharing..he really didnt concern me, he just amused me LOL
Thanks for you support Munch..I intend to ride my Vstar like a high class hooker with silicone implants. Sorry for the pun.

He’d be really annoyed by somebody like me, who started with a Magna 750. The price was about the same as a Rebel, without a huge risk of outgrowing the bike. So far it has treated me exceptionally well, handling very nicely. Definitely not as nimble as a 250, but I’ve learned to adjust for it.
Still, if you were a little closer to Michigan I’d consider picking up that 250 for my wife. Much nicer than the scooter she’s interested in.
November 4, 2008 at 7:06 pm #14576DaggerParticipantThe only shifting issue I have with my 02 is that sitting still sometimes it doesn’t want to down shift into first.. In those cases I’ve had to roll the bike slightly while trying to down shift to get it into gear.. Mostly I try to down shift while I’m still coming to a stop and it shifts into 1st fine…

November 4, 2008 at 7:13 pm #14577DaggerParticipantYeah.. I’m thinking about moving up to the 950 next year after I have more time and miles under my belt on the 650.. She’s definitely a sweet looking ride..

November 4, 2008 at 11:10 pm #14583smokeizfireParticipant…my 250 at the expense of my new “rocket”. My 250 is awesome for street…Hyosung GV250 btw…riding, but very unsuitable for the CA freeways. That’s why I won’t upgrade to anything less than a 900cc, since 750 and under is still considered “beginner”. Moreover, upgrading from one beginner moto to the next seems expensive, and I’d like to buy an upgrade that feels adequate to quell the urge, a little longer, for the next fix……which will probably be a Harley Soft-tail Deluxe or a Touring Street Glide. I’ll never sell my 250, but the Yamaha V-Star I may get next will be up for trading when she out wares her welcome.

November 4, 2008 at 11:26 pm #14585Sangria7ParticipantI think I stirred up some heated arguments on the other forums. Yes, the Rebel250 forum can be “cultish.”
Got the tire fixed today and had my clutch adjusted. She fires right up in any gear now. The clutch had way too much play and the sensor was not picking it up.
So all is well. I rode it back home and of course me being me, I tried to lean her far. ZOMG it felt nice and stable, unlike my little Rebel. I guess some weight is good on a bike.
Anyways, I really enjoy my Vstar thoroughly. The 6 weeks on the Rebel definitely helped me understand the simple mechanics, and physics of riding. I probably wont be as good as a lot of riders, but for as long as I am safe and ride the bike in a manner within my own abilities, I will have no problems.
November 5, 2008 at 6:16 pm #14604eonParticipantGlad you got it fixed, it’s a sweet looking bike. As far as the comments on the 250 board go I’d say you got off pretty lightly. In a forum dedicated to one specific bike, to say you had “outgrown” it after 650 miles is pretty inflammatory. That comes across as saying you have mastered it and that the others have not. If I was a Rebel 250 owner I would have fired up the flame thrower myself
Truth is that bike was never any good for the roads you are riding but it has allowed you to safely progress from the parking lot to the freeways. But then you know that already. I think it was just the word “outgrown” that set some people off.
November 5, 2008 at 7:50 pm #14607DaggerParticipantSangria.. I suggest getting the clutch kit they have for the 650.. Was the first thing I did to my bike.. Really helps with clutch adjustments and it’s a cheap fix to do…

November 5, 2008 at 8:10 pm #14608Sangria7ParticipantYup – and I acknowledged my poor choice of words. I guess I meant I have outgrown its usefulness to what I need a bike for – which is longer more stable commutes. The rebel just vibrated way too much for my taste and the acceleration or lack thereof scared me.
November 6, 2008 at 1:31 am #14613Sangria7ParticipantI did notice the friction zone is way out there LOL. Was this easy to install?
November 6, 2008 at 6:14 am #14621IanCParticipantSangria,
I test rode the VStar 650 and the Honda Shadow 750 Aero before I bought my VStrom. The thing about the VStar was I could just feel this heat coming up onto my pants and boots which just made me feel not at all comfortable. Did you notice that? Also it seemed like the pegs and controls were a little to far forward compared to the Rebel and Shadow, did you notice that?
Ian
November 6, 2008 at 11:12 am #14623Sangria7ParticipantYes the pegs and controls sit a little farther out but it doesnt bother me. It is different from the Rebel and Shadow but I kinda like how far they are. And yes you can feel heat from the pipes, but only at certain positions. When I am riding I cannot feel them..only when I flat foot it. I can feel the heat, but its not bad…noticeable, but tolerable.
November 6, 2008 at 5:46 pm #14630DaggerParticipantTook me 10 mins to install.. All you do is loosen the break line.. Unhook it.. Slide the meta tubing and spring over the line and reattach.. A little tricky reattaching with the spring on it.. But it’s not too hard.. Moved my friction zone in about an inch…
