Thinking of…

    Howdy

I am currently planning/thinking of gaining my motorcycle licence over the coming summer in the UK. Currently have no riding experience, interested due to my dad and his mates used to ride and have always being quietly interested.
I do know that I will need to get a CBT and then the motorcycle licence, with a 2 year restriction, due to me being a young whipper snapper at 19(nearly 20).
I have been researching, and like the look of the ninja 250r, however with my height of 6ft 5 and a bit and also weighing about 15 and a half stone. This is apprantly not ideal, maybe the 500R. However I need to get down to a dealership and try some.
There’s been talk of the dual sport bikes, however I personnaly due to like the look of these and never been interested in these.
The reviews I have read and watched on the 250R is the lightweight and easy turning, which to me sounds like a must for a beginneer to build confidence.
So I was wondering if there was any other ideas on bikes? And also any thoughts on taking a CBT then the motorcycle test straight after?

    Thanks

PS I know theres a current fresh topic on the same sort of topic however I dont want to distract from that discussion as I feel it would be unfair to post in his.

One comment on your question regarding how big a bike to get- it looks like you are in the UK. I think that there are restrictions on how big a bike you can ride when you first start out. You should check into that before you set your heart on something. :)

The older ninja 250r (not sure of the name in the UK) probably fits a little better than the newer model of the 500r. Both of those have fairing cutouts that interfere with the knees on long legged individuals. The Suzuki GS500F also seemed to fit better.

I think supermotos are a great way to go for a first bike, especially for taller individuals. They are very light and have taller seat to peg distances. Plus they look quite sporty (atleast to me).

I’m 6’2″ and ended up with an `06 Ninja 250r, mostly due to cost. The ninja was like new and less than half the price of any used supermoto I could find. Plus its a great bike. Just could use a little more leg room :)

And definitely look into bike restrictions in the UK. I’m not sure you can buy a 500cc your first year.

    For all the advice

I know the restrictions in UK restrict you for the first 2 years to 33.1bhp i believe, therefore cc not being involved.
However i think i should over look this, due to needing something to be comfortable, and i believe most bikes can be restricted down. (Another issue)
