But the dude was trying to rear-end me. I think they got the name wrong.
Riding home from the family Easter dinner yesterday, I noticed an H2 coming up fast on my rear, and he was going to overtake me before I passed the car coming up on my right. So I got over into the right. Fortunately I was watching for him to come up beside me in the rear-view, because he had gotten over too and looking to get a Honda hood ornament. Maneuver room was running out rapidly, because the car I had been trying to pass was clearly not familiar with Michigan highways, and was driving 20 mph under the limit. I goosed the throttle, taking me closer than I wanted, and had a nice escape path along the shoulder picked out, when the driver in the hummer realized the little red thing in front of him wasn’t a bug and might scuff up his paint.
The moral: watch your six. The guy behind you might be completely clueless, or might just be an asshole. I’m assuming in this case that I was dealing with the clueless. Either way, keep an eye out, because the other guy isn’t.

Then all of the sudden it seems like there are bikes everywhere and the cagers have long since forgotten what their fellow highway users look like. If you happen to be in one of those kind of areas, assume that you are invisible. Even here in Colorado where bikers are out year round (admittedly, on a limited basis during the cold weather), the cagers forget about us and the accident rate goes up and mortality goes down in late March to early May.

If I feel they are too close to comfort I use my full lane to slalom back and forth forcing their attention. Almost all tend to back up about a 1/4 off your tail then. They think your gonna dump it. Just in case that doesn’t work I flash my brakes several times…. just incase they are the “ohhhhhhh shinies….. ” type.

April 14, 2009 at 12:56 pm #17740Clay DowlingParticipantJust to make sure they noticed me. And they eventually did, although I was about 2 seconds from going for my escape route.
