Well, by now a lot of us have had some sort of accident happen on our bikes where we would have been seriously injured or worse were it not for our helmet/jacket/boots/gloves/pants/whatever, but because we had on our power ranger costumes (I’m the red ranger now), we walked away without a scratch. Post your stories here, and be detailed about how the gear saved you from further harm.
Mine begins with me, three weeks after buying my bike, travelling down a cobblestone road on the way home. There were kids playing on the side of the road who apparently were deliberately trying to see if they could make cars slam on their brakes, by doing things such as throwing rocks, running out in the street, etc. No, I’m not kidding. As I’m passing by (and remember, cobblestone road, so next to no traction anyway), one of them runs out in front of me deliberately trying to get me to slam on my brakes. Well, I did. And it didn’t go over too well. The bike slid across the road a few feet with me under it, having a damaged left side mirror and a shift lever. My shoulder and elbow specifically were what made contact with the ground, and they would likely have been broken/dislocated, were it not for the armor in my Joe Rocket jacket.
I got out from underneath the bike after realize I wasn’t in any pain at all and was able to move ok, and walked my bike the rest of the way home after getting the kids’ parents involved.

May 5, 2009 at 6:29 pm #18188megaspazParticipantthere’s a thing on this site about getting my assed whipped at the little dragon.
May 5, 2009 at 6:42 pm #18191WeaponZeroParticipantThey reimbursed me for the damage. I replaced the mirror and drilled a hole through the shift lever, putting a 1/4″ bolt through that one to “fix” it, pocketing the spare cash.

I did that on mine, and I didn’t even break off the levers in a crash. I purposefully cut them off. I love the feel of them now.

I had kids do that to me but I was driving my parents SUV (I was about 17), I slammed on the breaks, did a u-turn and chased those little buggers down I was so mad but they got away as they were on foot and ran behind some houses. I think I gave them a good scare though, HA! Glad you were able to tell the parents and that you were ok.
