Today I went with my friend to pick up his 05 ninja 250, and drove it home for him. A few things seemed out of place to me so I figured I would come and ask here first. I am new to riding this year, I bought a 08 ninja 250 so thats all I have to go on. The first think I noticed on the ride home was that the shocks are really soft compared to my 08 model, I know that the 05’s are probably just more broken in since it has 10,000 miles on compared to the 300 on my bike, but they seemed overly soft. Every time I took in the clutch to shift or came to a stop the bike would almost feel as if it was lunging forward. I was just wondering if that was normal, I have read that the suspension is stiffer in the 08 models, so maybe I’m just not used to it.

Also it seemed to have some issues idling. When I would come to a stop, and was holding the clutch in the idle would drop way way down and in fear of it dying in traffic I would give it some throttle to bring it back up, but just for giggles I let it do its thing at one point and it actually died on me. It doesn’t seem to do it every time the engine idles down so I’m not sure what the issue is. This bike was a very recent trade in at the dealership so maybe it was sitting for a long time? I just figured the dealer would have went through and cleaned it out.

Thanks in advance for any input.

The suspension on most bikes can be adjusted. As for the idling, it sounds as if the choke needs adjusting.

there is also an idle screw that can be adjusted that will change the idle rpm…

slushy shocks were a problem for pre 08 250Rs… if you read the review of the 08 250R on this site, you’ll see that he talks about bottoming out the old bikes…

Yup, pre-08 Ninja 250s had really soft shocks. A common trick is to replace the rear shock with one from a Ninja 500 (only certain years work as a direct replacement, you can find details in the faq at faq.ninja250.org).

As as stated, the idle screw is probably just set too low.
