I washed my bike this morning and went for a ride later on and found my speedometer needle was not moving at all. The odometer and trip switches appear to work normally, but the speedometer does not move. Is it possible I damaged something in the assembly when washing my bike? I have a 2004 Honda Shadow Aero cruiser. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

See if you can trace where the speedo cable is , on my Vulcan it runs down to the front…could be that in washing oyu just un screwed it… never seen the bike in real life so couldn’t guess any better…. but if the odometer rolls on while driving and the speedo doesn’t budge then its the gauge. Not sure about it being a fuse though since all the pics I see are showing it to be an old school gauge and not digital.

There is a multi-pin connector that plugs into the speedometer assembly underneath the housing. Unfortunately I don’t have small enough meter leads to check electrical connections at the connector. The cable doesn’t appear to be damaged at the connector. I also took a look under the seat to see if there was a lot of residual water there and there didn’t appear to be any. The only thing I can think of is it’s either something in the speedometer assembly that burned up (the speedometer is a mechanical needle), or perhaps it could be the speed sensor (I find this unlikely since it’s under a cover and well protected. I just don’t want to spend the $250 on a new speedometer assembly if I don’t have to.

Funny thing, I let the bike sit over-night and rode it to work this morning. The speedometer needle worked ok. I guess something got wet and needed time to dry off….it’s just kinda weird. About the service and parts manuals, you’re preaching to the choir there bro. I had a problem with my bike about a month ago and needed to get a service manual to do the fix myself. Fortunately, I joined a website that caters to Honda Shadow owners and was able to get a pdf copy from another member…saved $60! I’m pretty sure I’ve probably saved about $500 – 800 this year alone by doing my own oil changes and fixing the last problem I had with it.

it rained a lot one day (not certain this is related at all) and all of a sudden, the speakers stopped working in my work van. for like 3 or 4 days I’d either get no speaker sound at all, or it’d work but wouldn’t work the moment I turned the van off and back on…then..on like the 5th or so day…it just suddenly worked again, every time. no problems. I don’t know if it was caused by rain, or just some random weird coincidence, but strange things happen sometimes….

i had a similar situation last week, just had the speedo cable come loose. i had no idea how it worked, so i took it back to the dealership… 2 twists of pliers later, i was good to go
