Hey everybody,
I’m a relatively new rider, found this website looking for gear reviews and its been really helpful. I rode dirt bikes as from about 7-13 but after a feud with my dad, stopped riding for a few years. Over this summer, my dad and I restored a BMW R80 project bike he had in the barn. (He’s a Moto Guzzi dealer and European bike mechanic and collector) So, it took us a few months but we got the bike up and running.
Over the summer we:
1.replaced both tires
2.new electrical switches
3.rebuilt the carbs
4.Had the tank boiled to remove the liner
5.Had the tank repainted
6.New battery
7.Acquire side panels
8.rebuilt the brake system
9.Recovered the seat
All in all, about 1500-2000 dollars worth of work.
I also took the Basic Motorcycle Safety course over the summer, to bypass the state riding test.I know this website tends to say that even 600cc is too much for a beginning rider, but I haven’t had any problems with the 800cc’s in mine. I’m actually still pretty hesitant in my riding, and often don’t go above 70.
I’ve got about 400 miles of country riding so far(20 of which were on gravel and loose sand. That is freaking terrifying). My dad and I tend to go out early morning on Saturdays and ride through Texas hill country. He’s not letting me take my bike away until he’s completely satisfied with my riding. So far, I’ve done well. Now that I’m close to getting my bike from him, I’m looking for my first set of gear. I’ve just been borrowing my dad’s extras.
Here’s a pic of my baby!

Welcome to the forums!

Sounds like you are having a great time. And dad owns a bike shop!. Lucky man.

If I’m not mistaken, your bike is a twin, so it has much more linear power when you twist the throttle. Also, it’s from the 1980s, right? I’m sure you’ll be fine.
Anyway, that’s a beautiful machine you have and welcome!
