Lots of veteran fanatics seem to have a stable in their garage, taking out whichever bike fits their needs at the moment, a different tool for every job. Being a newbie, and one who’s CFO(wife) isn’t quite yet caught up in two wheeled euphoria, I’ll just be happy to stick with my current ride. However, if we were to hit the lottery or something similarly coffer filling my first bit of fun would be to own a bike, or two, or three in all categories. Here are mine, what would you guys choose? This should be based on fantasy, so leave out $$$, ease of servicing or anything to do with practicality. Remember if it’s in the shop you’ve still got the rest of the stable to choose from.

Standard
The toughest category for me as that is what I am most drawn to. If I had to choose just one it would be the Moto Guzzi Griso, specifically the 8V SE, which is actually not being imported to North America. In a perfect world I’d also have an Aprillia Tuono, Triumph Speed Triple, a KTM Superduke and a Ducati Streetfighter and of course my current ride a Ducati GT1000.

Sport
Italian sportsbikes are so cliche, so I might just have to go with a Buell 1125CR over a Ducati 1198 just to be somewhat of an iconoclast.

Touring
Lots of great bikes in this category, but I really want a Triumph Sprint

Cruiser
Not really my category, but I could almost picture myself on a V Rod or that 2200cc beast that Triumph calls The Rocket.

Adventure
I’d have to say a BMW R1200 GS just over a Triumph Tiger.

Left out off road or even dual sport as my old bones do better on pavement, and “my” beemer will handle dirt roads just fine, so I haven’t even read enough about them to fantasize. If there’s another type of bike I left out feel free to add a category.

I’m not one to be looking at bikes in each category. Cruisers? Meh. Dual sports? No thanks. But I’d probably go for a Buell 1125R, a BMW sport-tourer (the K1300GT?), or the Concourse, a Wakan (because they just look cool!), and a project or two. I think of taking something like the new Honda Fury and putting a flat seat on it, rear sets, and a front fairing…

Yeah, I’m a sport bike kind of guy.

For me it would be:

STANDARD
Suzuki Bandit 1200S. It’s got everything that standards are all about in spades. There’s a difference between an actual standard and a naked sportbike, and a lot of people dont seem to realize that.

SPORT
Once upon a time, Kawasaki’s Ninja line of motorcycles were known for being not only capable track weapons, but also superb street machines, even tour-worthy. Unfortunately, the 2003 revamp of the entire Ninja lineup pretty much destroyed that concept when they replaced the ZX-9R Ninja (perhaps the ultimate STREET sportbike of its time) with the track scratching ZX-10R. If I could, I would get the most pristine examples of the ZX-9R I could find. If that wasn’t a possibility, then I’d go with the Honda VFR800FI Interceptor.

TOURING
Honda ST1300 ABS. It’s got everything I’ll ever need in a touring bike.

CRUISER
Honda VTX1800. That thing is sexy and has tons of performance while still being everything a boulevard cruiser should be.

ADVENTURE
Probably the Kawasaki KLR650. It may not be as street-cushy as the BMW GS series but if I did have multiple bikes, I’d want this one to be leaning a little bit more toward the off road area.

NAKED SPORT/STREETFIGHTER
As I mentioned above, I feel that standards and naked sports/streetfighters are two different kinds of bikes with two different purposes, and the only thing they share is looks. My ideal naked sportbike/streetfighter would be the Kawasaki Z1000, because, well, it’s a beast, but it’s a lightweight beast.

MOTARD
After taking my license test/MSF course on a little Yamaha TW200 dual sport, I have come to really love these types of bikes. The defacto benchmark example of it is the KTM 690 Duke, and with good reason. And if I could get it, I would in a heartbeat.

Very true, though they seem to be my second choice in most categories. Seems like most European manufacturers have a relatively limited product line, but Triumph, much like the big 4, seems to have a top notch performer in just about every category of motorcycle.

As I’ve stated a few times on this board, for the most part I’m not really drawn to most Japanese bikes, but that Kawasaki Z1000 is a beautiful bike, definitely tempting. Did I read that they’re going to stop offering it in the US due to disappointing sales?

Ok, here goes, my fantasy world choices:

Standard
Not sure what type of bike I would pick in this category, so I’ll go with a Harley XR1200.

Sport
Ducati Desmosedici RR. Or an Aprilia RSV4.

Streetfighter/Naked Sport
Ducati Monster 1100S. Or BMW K1300R. Or KTM 990 Superduke.

Touring
I think I would be more interested in sports touring, so perhaps Honda’s upcoming V4-engined (VFR 1200?) sports tourer, or a BMW K1300S. I could probably also lump KTM’s 990 SMT (Supermoto Touring) in this category.

Cruisers
Not really interested in this genre, but if I had to make a pick in this category it would definitely have to be a Harley Davidson Sportster. The Sportster really is more of a classic “standard” bike to me, so I don’t know if it even fits in this category.

Adventure
The BMW R1200GS would surely figure in here, but I’d also give the Moto Morini Gran Passo a look.

Supermotard
KTM 990 Supermoto.

Sport: Honda ‘Blade, Yamaha R1, Duc 1098R, Bimota DB7

Streetfighter: Triumph Speed Triple (or Street Triple R as a lesser substitute), KTM SuperDuke, maybe Duc Streetfighter

That’s not to say I wouldn’t branch out and go for some other types of motorcycles as well, but at the moment I just don’t know much about them so I can’t claim to want any of them.
