OK so I’m about to purchase my first bike and I live in a condo with no garage options. Although I dont live in a bad high crime area, I would hate to take a chance at it getting stolen. There is some covered parking that I could possibly chain my bike to. Does anyone reccomend a certain brand/type of security (chains, disk locks, alarms) over another? I just dont want my brand new baby carried away by a bunch of thugs!

Only thing I can say and cannot over state enough… Lo-Jac…. expensive but very worth it. As a matter of fact 8 biles were recovered here in “no-crime” NC (minus Durham) Because one owner had Lo-Jac installed. The cops traced the bike to the location and found 7 others behind that house that had been previously stolen. So for times when the crooks are better prepared….

Get it, most insurance companies will give you a discount if you get one aswell. Most brands are pretty equal, but it is normally a case of you get what you pay for. Also look at lockable covers aswell, I’ve seen some where the front lock is a disc brake lock aswell as having a secure strap that you can loop a chain / cable through and then pass it through rear wheel / frame.

Hey now, don’t go talkin’ bad about Durham. Raleigh and Charlotte have some crime too.

I never talk bad about Durham…just pointing out the obvious. Either way atleast it’s not like 5th Ward in Houston,TX!

My theory is just to have a low deductable on your theft insurance and then don’t worry about it anymore. I only pay 100 bucks in my bike gets stolen and I park it on the street all the time. It’s a lot easier than always chaining it up, or using disc locks and alarm systems.

As for lowjack I would definitely recommend that as well if you feel like paying the money, last I researched it they cost around 800-1200 dollars to install which is not worth it for my bike (I could probably only sell my bike for around $3500 right now since it is a 2001 with 35k miles). But if you have a brand new bike it may be worth it for you.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will probably go for a kryptonite 6ft. chain I saw on motorcyclesuperstore.com. It was pretty expensive at over $100 but got a ton of great reviews. It seems like this will hopefully do the trick as lowering the deductible would raise my insurance by well over $100 for a year of coverage. Still havent decided on the exact bike I want but leaning heavily towards the Ninja 650R which might put me around $7,000.
