Hey Guys, I know this is a little off topic but my wife is trying to purchase and scooter to putt putt to and form work. But WHAT would be a good starter scooter. I’ve used the knowledge I got from here to try and help her out but I want some opinions so we can make an inform decision.

This year the scooter market is still a bit punch-drunk from the economic uppercut we received in 2009, but from the looks of it the manufacturers are coming back to their senses with some new and exciting models appearing late this year. The scooter that brought the most excitement and gave us the most hope in 2010 was the Kymco Downtown 300i.
We got an early impression of the Downtown in May, riding it from Austin to the 2010 Amerivespa rally in San Antonio. The Downtown 300i excels in so many categories with its engaging aesthetics and masterfully balanced handling, there is little room for improvement (outside of the less-than gratifying seat). The Downtown 300i is sporting an entirely new, true 300cc fuel-injected engine that takes to the highways with conviction.
Honorable Mention – Honda PCX
With its stylish new PCX, Honda has delivered a scooter that’s comfortable, compact, sporty and, at $3399, not terribly expensive. Sure, like you, we’d like to have seen this as a 250cc Honda Helix replacement, but this little machine is pretty damned sexy with enough get up and go to push you around at a respectable 67 mph while maintaining miserly 100-plus mpg fuel efficiency.

Re. Top Speed:
50cc scooter top speed is 30 mph
125 cc scooter top speed is 50 mph
250 cc scooter top speed is 70 mph
400 cc scooter top speed is 90 mph
650 cc scooter top speed is 110 mphFor high speed highways at a 65 mph speed limit I would go with the 400 cc, for 55 mph highways the 250cc will work.
You need the 400cc for quick acceleration and speed when merging on to traffic on exit ramps, a 250 cc scooter doesn’t have the quick acceleration.
The 250cc scooter can reach a 70 mph top speed but it might take almost a mile to reach that speed.
I highly suggest the Suzuki Burgman 400, or the Honda Silver Wing, or the Yamaha Majesty.

October 5, 2010 at 8:30 pm #28601eonParticipantI’m late to the game here, but I’ve been riding a 500cc scooter for the past 2 years/23000 miles and I agree with what Rab posted. Also the Kymco that Jeff mentioned comes highly recommened and is probably cheaper than the more well known brands. Another review of that can be found here..
