Safety Gear – Pants

    As a newbie to the motorcycle world, I’d like to first say thanks to everyone’s input. After lots and LOTS of hours spent searching for the right motorcyle, I finally purchased a 2006 SV650 (naked). Now that I have purchased the bike, I want to make sure I have the right gear (ALGATT) and of course this means lots and LOTS of researching yet again.

    So far I haven’t heard anything about protective pants with padding in the rear. Are there any pants with this padding? It seems that the only padding would be in the knees and hips. However, being a snowboarding on the east coast, you soon realize how sore your butt can get falling on ice, and I can only imagine its 100x worse on pavement.

    Anyone know of pants with this type of padding that won’t break the bank?

    That’s not a spot I’ve seen padded on any riding pants. Riding is not like snowboarding where your lower contact points are your knees and butt. In riding, the contact points are more likely to be the sides of your legs or knees.
    Of course this doesn’t mean your other body parts are safe from impact, but it is less likely. Beyond that, you might want to check out some underarmor.

    +1…you’re not going to contact on your arse…you’re more than likely to hit forearm/wrist and palm of your hand first (which means broken collar bone) then shoulder (about the same time as your hip) and split second later, your head.

    Of course that’s just one scenaro of a 100’s, but that seems the most common in single bike crashes. In car v. bike, its’ usually the front of your into the cockpit of your bike and then the offending car…

    Sooooo…

    I wouldn’t worry too much about tush armor.

    In my 40 mph low-side on the left side almost a year ago, the bottom portion of my First Gear overpants got totally shreded from sliding and I had a nice rash on my left butt cheek. That area didn’t even seem reinforced. When I looked for a new pair of overpants I wanted better abrasion protection in the bottom area. I got Rev’It Turbine overpants which looks thicker in the bottom area, but I’m still unsure how it would stand up to a slide, so I’d like to get leather pants which are supposed to be the best for abrasion protection.

    My theory on why the seat of the pants are not padded/armored is: a) it would interfere with you seating comfort, b) like others have said, the “impact” points are usually joints like elbow/shoulder/hip/knee, and c) there’s a lot of meat in the bottom so impact protection is “less critical” than abrasion protection in that particular area.

    You are not likely to break any thing landing on your bottom due to the nice natural padding gluteus maximus provides. You just need to have abrasion protection on the rear.

    The armor padding is to protect bones and joints that can be easily injured by impact. Knees, shoulders, elbows, hips. Remember motorcycling gear is designed to reduce the severity of injuries in case of an accident, not eliminate minor bruises and soreness.

    Thanks for the input. I guess I never thought too much about the impact areas, just more of overall protection. While I have never slid across pavement before, I would think that depending on the angle/degree of the fall, there would be a possibility to get some serious rash on your rear. I guess thats a matter of abrasion resistance and not padding.
