What do y’all think of Royal Enfield bikes? My brother got one. For some reason, his rear light doesn’t turn on when he’s cruising, only when he presses the brake. He says it’s by design. I’m sorta worried coz it’s hard to see him when being followed.

They come with drums, you’re right, but there’s a disc retrofit that you can buy.

Royal Enfield are 1950s British motor bikes which were also allowed to be built in India under license back then. Thing is, even though the British Royal Enfield Company went belly-up decades ago, the Indian company never stopped building them for the natives.

Although they have been modernized in some ways (some have electronic ignition, etc.), they are essentially 1950s motorcycles with all that that means. It’s common knowledge the Indian Royal Enfields have QC problems and constantly need repaired.

I am just guessing here but I am pretty certain the rear light does not need to be permanently on on bikes in the UK, don’t know about India (but somehow I doubt it). So your brother is probably correct that it is by design but that does not make it legal in the US.

Gorgeous little bikes and as another poster said, a true 1950s motorcycling experience (Hmm…).

I’d love to have one as a second bike if I could justify another bike (which I can’t what with everything else…). That is, if they were available in CA, which they’re not as they’re not emissions certified for CA.

From what I’ve seen on the internet though, you wouldn’t want to use it as freeway transport or for daily commuting as they’re barely fast enough for the former and too maintenance intensive for the latter. Lots of fun though and a real head-turner.

From what I’ve read they used to be a great british bike. They were sold off to an Indian company who makes them in india now.

everything I’ve read is since they moved there the quality has suffered.

I know a guy who lives up the street from me, and it seems he is always in the front yard working on it. But being that it is still the 1950’s design, it is supposed to be super easy to work on, as basic as an motorcycle engine gets. Plus I would say they sound and look pretty sweet.
