It wasn’t an official Patriot Guard mission, as that is Tuesday for the four Lakewood police officers that were killed last Sunday. This was a ride to the memorial, a biker’s salute there along with 4 minutes of silence (one for each officer), then a ride-by of the Lakewood PD, again with a biker’s salute.
Powerful morning. Weather cooperated, thankfully. I wish I could make the official mission…
December 7, 2009 at 2:32 am #23605eonParticipantThat sounds like a good thing to do. I have to ask though what a biker’s salute is. Never heard that term before (and it does not bring to mind anything respectful).
December 7, 2009 at 2:52 am #23608briderdtParticipantThat’s the other thing they called it — rapping of pipes. High-rev, earth shaking, loud.
My pipe (yup, only one) isn’t that loud, and a 650 V-twin isn’t that impressive…
Oh, and the other thing — the direction the pipes are pointing is all-important. We passed the memorial and made a u-turn so the pipes were pointing AWAY from the memorial. To have the pipes pointing toward the memorial is considered disrespectful.

I’m sure there were good intentions but it could easily upset some people (not including you in this as your SV650 is not exactly known for ear splitting pipes).
December 7, 2009 at 3:52 am #23629MunchParticipantIts well tolerated, especially after they see the flags.
December 7, 2009 at 4:52 am #23630briderdtParticipantBut some one on the PNWRider board mentioned that too.
Not to worry though. It was done with preamble, and for a prescribed time frame. As explained at the ride, when you salute the dead, you want to make noise to wake the dead.
But hearing 65 Harley’s rapping pipes all at once was pretty impressive.
December 7, 2009 at 5:00 pm #23634eonParticipantQuote “it is a planned event they are invited to and folks know whats coming.”
That makes all the difference there. That bit was not clear to me.The Southpark episode in question poked fun at Harley riders with loud pipes. They equated loud pipes with a “look at me” mentality.
December 7, 2009 at 6:25 pm #23635briderdtParticipant…from talk yesterday, the relationship between the local PGR and the Lakewood police dept is pretty close. In a good way.
December 8, 2009 at 6:53 am #23642RabParticipantThey equated loud pipes with a “look at me” mentality.
Err… Is there any other reason for loud pipes?
