Riding on gravel roads

I did this today. All was going well on the crown of the road. It wasn’t until a van came the other way, that I had to move off to the side. Man, that was a pain. I just kept on the throttle in the low end of the powerband (or as I call it, the ‘slug-zone’ as to not overtorque it, and drifted along, trying not to fight sliding all over. It was just a mile long, but it was the longest mile I’ve rode yet.

Any tips for riding on gravel? Other than me now vowing to avoid gravel roads if at all possible.

gravel isn’t so bad, try getting down my dirt road since they pushed all the sand into one 1/8 mile strip. 1-3 mph and feet dragging the whole way.

but when it rains and the georgia red clay comes into play….THAT makes it interesting :)

remember, when going over 5 mph or so, the only way to be fully in control is to keep your feet on the pegs, as taking them off makes it easier to throw around your weight balance. don’t drag your feet unless you’re being pushed around by very loose terrain and very slow speeds.

Speed could be your friend to stability when traveling on gravel roads.

Personally, I like to keep it above 15 mph.. when I start to feel teh tire slipping, I give it more throttle.. not a whole handful, but enough to stabilize the bike, just like the MSF class taught.. if you feel that your bike is going down, more throttle.
Look where you want to go, if you look down, you go down.
