How do they figure a Ducatti 696 with 80hp, and the Ninja 250 25hp to be in the same league? Anything with 80hp on 2 wheels doesn’t seem entry level to me at all. Poor, poor misled consumer. Which ever one of you falls for that one, may we bow our heads and have a moment of silence……

On the one hand, the Complete Idiot’s guide lists the “mini monster” as a good beginners bike, and indicates that the FZ6 may be one.

The logic of how they came up with a 4 bike list with these four escapes me. Especially since the Buell looks, to me, to be a little small to be a great choice for many members of the heavier sex, including the guy in the picture. If you have the FZ6, why not the Suzuki 650SV or the Kawasaki Ninja 650R? If you have the Buell and the Ninja 250, where are all the other bikes recommended on this site?

    Beats me.

two valves per cylinder…it must be rather ok than 4p/c…but these definitely have lots of torque and are less forgiving than the sv650…dang these are ducs man

The Monster and the FZ6 should be on a different list.

I think the OLDER 620 Ducati could make the list

To match the larger motor’s needs and up the number of horses that live at the top end of the rev range, the cams now feature more aggressive lift and duration. This all adds up to a claimed 60 horses at 9,500 rpm and 53.3 foot-pounds of torque at 6,750 rpm. This is a solid improvement over the old motor’s figures of 51 horsepower and 50 foot-pounds. And, in addition to the increase in outright power figures, the new motor now revs 1,500 rpm higher than its predecessor, with a rev limit set at 9,500 rpm.

I believe that 51-60 HP is still manageable.

The Duck is actually the two I am less bothered by. The FZ6 consistently gets points (either for or against depending) in reviews because of the engine. It is running a only mildly detuned R6 engine. It is really peaky and powerful. As a city bike, the reviewers tend not to like it, since it needs to be spun like a sport bike. As a beginner bike it isn’t considered friendly for those exact same reasons. It only get points for the engine when you take it out into the canyons and start riding it like a sport bike.

Somewhat related, I sat on a 696 last night. Wow, is that ever a cool feeling bike. It is vey small and tight. You are leaned forward slightly (similar to my ZZR-250) but there is _nothing_ in front of you. The instruments are small, the headlight is out of the way, basically, it is the handlebars and then nothing – just the road. Even the mirrors are small and off to the sides. It really feels like being Wiley Coyote strapping yourself to an Acme rocket (similar leg position too!).
What a cool experience that bike must be.

you guys are right, that Duc is no beginner’s bike and as Matt says, that FZ6 is kind of hot too.
the idiots guide is a good book.
but, the 696 is a new animal compared to the 620 and 696…. my two cents
