although, I would stress that the R1 is DEFINITELY a bad beginner bike.
September 10, 2008 at 4:15 pm #11925MattParticipantNo hate for super sports from me, I just know I’m not their target market.
But I have such a hard time getting excited over the annual release of supersports. Every year it is an evolution of a faster, lighter, more powerful machine. I mean, it would be really cool if we had this sort of rapid development in cars (as opposed to a new generation every half decade). But just like the horsepower race between all the super cars, ultimately none of this will matter to me. Even if I owned one of these bikes, I’d never be able to touch its limits. I bet if I took a track school, went on five track days a year, I’d still never push the limits of a carb’d supersport. These machines are just so incredibly competant already -it is hard to get excited by them for me.
What I want to see are more game changing bikes. The Piaggio MP3, the Versys, the new Ninja 250R, heck even the GSX-F 650. The bikes that change people’s perceptions of motorcycling, or what you can do on a motorcycle – and for how much money, or WHO can do what on a motorcycle . Those are the really amazing bikes to me.
Of course, I’m guilty of “sexy new bike lust” too… just not from the track-day bikes.

If your ridin on a track all the time sure go ahead and get one but on the road really you don’t or shouldn’t need much more than a Ninja 250R or a 500R. I mean the fastest you are supposed to go is around 70 on the interstate.
September 10, 2008 at 8:05 pm #11930AnonymousGuestagreed, but most people on the sports bikes forums(i checked out one) think that since their bike can actually GO 150 that they are granted the RIGHT to do so..as long as things are not busy..or its a secondary road and no one is around….Love their looks(thats why I got the Ninja 250 not a 250 cruiser. Like the Ninjas riding position..I STILL dont like the position of the MSF 250 cruisers and hate the feet in front “feel”. But as you said and are 100% right..for the most part they are totally impractical..plus not that ive sat on a GSX R 600 and I HATE that riding position I dont think I see one in my future unless I find one thats more upright like the ninja 250. and to my knowledge there is not one. I will probably end up on a nonja 500 or possibly a SV650 but to be honest the 250 does everything I want just fine so id like to see some more 250’s here(in standards/naked)bikes not cruisers sometime.
September 11, 2008 at 12:10 am #11936JirikiParticipantI ride a 250R (08)… and it is a great commuter. I am probably heading to Thunderhill in about 3 weeks for my first track day if I can find affordable leathers (kinda want those ones we saw at Dainese shop, spaz :S ). Eventually, I want to work up to riding a track in something like an R1.
I didn’t get a motorcycle to save gas, I didn’t get a motorcycle to commute… I got a motorcycle to have fun and go quickly (in twisties and even faster on a track).
So, the reason I posted this link is because the microsite has the best explanation of what cross plane crank shaft is doing. This is the first production (non-race bike) to incorporate this technology…. this is not HP wars… it is throttle response and vibration control… this has nothing to do with the limits of the bike but how it rides in all RPM range in all situations…
personally, i find any advancement in motorcycle technology interesting…
