Hello All… here is my story in a few short sentences…
Firstly this summer I will turn 40… secondly over the last 2 years there have been 6 deaths in my family, from old age to cancer (no accidents).
These two things have gotten me thinking about the fact that I have wanted a motorcycle my whole life… what am I waiting for? Until I win the lottery? Until I am too old to even consider riding a bike? For some sign from above?
So now I think to myself, “What better time than the present?” I have a 7 mile commute to work; I recently moved to Southern California, I have the money to pay cash for either of the two motorcycles that I am looking at…
So what is holding me back now?… the fact that I can not decide which type of bike I want, a sport bike (cheaper) cruiser (seems more appropriate for my age and job (Ninja 500 or Vulcan 900)…
Anyone have any thoughts? Or know of anyone who bought a bike then regretted it so bad they wished they never bought it? The 2006 Ninja is what I went to the store looking for since it looks great and is only $2200… while there I saw the 2008 Vulcan for $5800, sat on it and realized that it seems to be a better match for me as an “old fat guy”… and the Ninja seems so ‘young and sporty’…

I started on the Vulcan 500 and can tell ya you will do good to have that to learn from before hopping straight to the 9. The 900 is about 200 pounds heavier… .a lot more torque in the lower gears…can get get scary fast if you decide to “lay into her” and well…. just all in all a beast for under 1000 cc’s. As far as Sport or Cruiser…. sit on both… see what your back, you soul and your arse tells ya. To heck with outward appearances…. it’s for your enjoyment…no others.
Congrats though! Shame it takes death to remind people to live.
Sorry for your losses…. however I am waiting my turn to go through some… with baby boomers getting to that time of their lives, it’s gonna seem like the world is ending to a lot of people.May 9, 2009 at 5:57 pm #18298Sed8MeParticipantWell, I used to have an RM 125 that was modified for dirt racing… but I only raced against friends and family on my older brothers farm… and that was more than 15 years ago!
Thanks for your advice… I think in the end I will end up going with the Ninja 500 for a few reasons… cost and size being two big reasons… I just have to remember that this is my “first” street bike… and by first I need to remember it wont be my last!
regards,
