Hello from San Diego. I want to thank those that are supporting this site. I have learned many things about street riding for the noob from reading the articles and postings.
I am contemplating a return to riding after more than twenty years. At one time I had a Kaw 550 LTD until someone decided to pull out in front of me one day. Being a dirt bike rider since I was 10 years old, this college student didn’t know what to do on pavement, with shorts and t-shirt on. Well lady luck was with me that day and my skidding rear tire slowed me down enough to swerve around (after letting up on the break without a high side) the front end bumper of the car between on-coming traffic. After that I swore off riding. But now 20 years later, it’s time to get back on the horse. I’ve completed the classroom portion of the MSF class and will be taking the riding classes this weekend. From reading on this site and others (plus Hough’s book), I think I know my mistake all those years ago, no front break usage. I’m hoping to learn proper road riding skills and see if the psychy will let me back on a bike. Wish me luck this weekend.
A cautiously optimistic (but scared to death) noob.
RobM…
P.S. If I’m successful, next will be getting a bike and realllllllly good gear…

I took the MSF course based on advice I got from some of the other, more experienced users. I think you will find the riding portion of the course will put you at ease with riding (properly!) Welcome to the site, from one noob to another, lol!

I’m hoping that the riding portion of the class will give me some confidence and comfort back on the bike. If you haven’t already done so you might consider getting David Hough’s book “Proficient Motorcycling”. I’ve found it to be insightful with instructions on who to control a street bike and roading riding situtaions.
