Howdy. Me and my bro plan on getting our first bikes this year. We’re 27 & 30 (him) respectively. We’ve been eyeing the 500’s. My bro went to a bike shop today looking at bikes (dreaming) and the dealer was selling him on the Ninja 650r. He’s about 6’1″ and my guess is around 230-240lbs (damn site bigger than me!). I’ve been reading up a little on it and was wondering if the Ninja 650 was one of those higher than 500cc bikes that was possibly acceptable as a starter bike. I know the sv650 has been mentioned alot of sites I’ve visited, including this one. Would it’s Parallel Twin fall in line with the sv650’s V-Twin in terms of managable power that is respectably forgiving? I only ask because I’m curious. I’m sure he’s made up his mind already since he came in the door acting like a kid that just seen Santa down at the mall. Can’t blame him though, I ache to pick up the bike I’ve been eyeing (gs500f).

The thing you want to avoid is an Inline-Four (I-4) engine over 500cc’s. They are a lot more twitchy and difficult to ride in my opinion. The 650 v-twin is no slouch though, and I would caution your brother to be careful if he is giong to get it. I usually tell new riders to stay away from them unless their ego’s can’t handle anything less than a 600 (or they have dirtbike experience).
