ParticipantI actually bought one instead of a 250cc just cause I knew I was going to upgrade in a year to a 650R. The bike is a little heavier than a 250R but not by much. I’m 5’10” weighing close to 190lbs., and I have no problems flat footing or holding up the weight.
The bike’s throttle is very good if you respect it. If you grab a fistful, even can happen on a 250R, it will take off. The bike just needs to be respected, but not feared. I feel just as comfortable riding the 650R as I did the 250 at the BRC. It’s all about how comfortable you feel. Sit on both bikes and see how you feel on them. If they let you test drive it, go for it, even if it’s just duck walking across the lot.
PS… I have no prior motorcycle experience before the BRC.

ParticipantI started with a 650R instead of a 250 because I was relatively confident in my riding ability. I have no problems with it on the highway or anything. I might upgrade to a more powerful bike at some point, but this bike has plenty of power for me.

ParticipantI took the MSF course in 2008, bought a 2009 650R in May and couldn’t be happier. I think it was the perfect purchase for a new rider such as myself. Just don’t rush things, get to know the bike over the first few thousand miles, and then you’ll be riding like champ. Very beginner-friendly, but with plenty of power to provide the adrenaline rushes when the time is right for you.
Plus, it’s great for long trips on the highway with again, plenty of power to spare.

ParticipantI got an ’09 Yamaha FZ6R after debating the same thing in my own mind for about 3 months. As with the Ninja650r, it seems to be a toned down 600cc engine and to me is very easy to manage, yet provides a little ummphf should you desire.
At some point, I may actually get a 200-250 dual-sport just for fun since it was so fun to ride in MSF. (Lots of gravel/dirt roads around here)
