Hi, everyone. I’m so green about bike riding that you can call me spinach girl. *LOL* I haven’t rode before and I’m nervous yet so excited. My first class is Oct 1 and I can’t wait. I live in Pittsburgh,PA and want a sports bike. Everyone keeps telling me to look into an 600 because the 250 and 500 are “too small.” I’m 5’2 and this will be my first time riding and be darn to hurt myself because of what others think. So with that being said I’m going to go with my gut and look at the 250 or 500. I adore this site because everyone here seems so sincere and not rude to newcomers. I’ve lurked other sites and boy some of the vets need a hug! Thanks for being so nice, Bianca

September 23, 2008 at 8:28 pm #12581MunchParticipantGood to read you are already heading off in the right direction by excersizing caution. Make sure to always ride your own ride. Peer pressure is rarely good…. even more dangerous in the bike world.
Hope your experiences is as addicting as the rest of ours! And 3 times safer.Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a prediction, but today…… is a Bi**h
September 23, 2008 at 10:54 pm #12595bob250ParticipantGet yourself a 250 and don’t listen to the “600” guys. You will have more fun on a 250 than you can shake a stick at. Good luck with your msf class. Ride safe.
September 23, 2008 at 10:59 pm #12596megaspazParticipantso if i’m rude, will you give me a hug?
Welcome! damn, i just can’t be rude… can i have a hug anyway?

You all are so great. I truly mean that. I’ve been studying my book for the permit test, I’m so nervous and it’s only Tuesdday! *LOL* I think I’m ready for Thursday. I got an 100 percent on the practice test. Go Bianca! Go Bianca! I’m doing the running man! *LOL*
BiancaSeptember 24, 2008 at 1:06 am #12605dcJohnParticipantAt 5’2″, the Ninja 250 is going to be a great fit and a terrific bike to learn on. I’m loving mine.
September 24, 2008 at 4:49 pm #12658ilnamParticipantNinja 250 might be pretty sweet, but don’t forget the 500s either. I enjoy my Suzuki GS500 and they shouldn’t be disregarded like the 600s. And it’s not too small. You’ll do fine on the permit test! Don’t sweat it. Although, I initially scored almost every question wrong, it was actually because they were using the wrong answer key! It got sorted out pretty quick though
September 24, 2008 at 5:07 pm #12660WeaponZeroParticipantI’m new to riding myself and I live in Pittsburgh, too. I’ve been riding for about ~3-4months and have been using my bike as transportation. I have a red 2000 Suzuki SV650. Whereabouts in Pittsburgh are you? I’m in Brookline. My niece is named Bianca
You’re going to love the MSF course. If you take it at CCAC South Campus, with Bernie Hauger as the instructor, you’ll have an awesome time. He’s a funny guy.
As far as starting out on a 250 or 500 goes, definately. I only got my SV650 over a ninja 500 because I managed to get such a sweet deal on it. I don’t regret it though. If you want a sportbike style beginner friendly bike, the Ninja 500, Ninja 250, and GS500F are your best bets. Don’t go with a Hyosung because the only dealership around here is crappy and doesn’t service the bikes, only sell them. My dad went there a couple months back and they told him he’d have to take the bike to Greensburg to get it serviced. That’s what, 2 counties away? After they told him that he walked out without a bike, and bought a used Kawasaki.
Anyway, hope you have fun on whatever bike you get and if we get some more Pittsburgh area members we can organize group rides. Right now I’ve got nobody to ride with cause the only people I know around here who ride are people I would get a restraining order against if I could.
September 24, 2008 at 5:19 pm #12663Bianca30Participantthe 250’s and 500’s. I’m so illiterate when it comes to bikes. But, I did notice that the 250’s look similar to the 600-(650’s???) and the back of the 500 look different(right?). I want it to look sporty. I did like the gs500, it was cute. I’m going to look at some bikes tomorrow after the test. I don’t know guys, I’m so confused. All I know is that I want a bike that I’ll be able to handle. And 2 more ppl said to get the 600. I’m going to start punching ppl in throat every time someone suggest that! They’re not taking into consideration that I’m already nervous(I’m a paramedic and I’ve seen some unpretty things that made me not want to ride) and that I’m new. My supervisor said that I will get bored with a small bike. I rather be bored and safe. I don’t want a bike for speed(if that makes sense) I just want to enjoy it . Bike riding to me seem like “freedom” if that make any sense. I cringe every time I see the guys going really fast w/ no dam helmet, no protective gear, and doing those wheelies; and looking at those youtube videos with the guys getting hurt scares me. I know most of them have been riding for many, many years but I still get nervous. Maybe it’s the medical side of me that’s nervous, but the Bianca side wants to ride! (makes sense???) Now, I need a hug!!!

September 24, 2008 at 5:32 pm #12666WeaponZeroParticipantThe reason behind the visual difference between the 250 and 500 is because the 250 got updated this year with a new look like the bigger ninjas, while the 500 hasn’t been updated much since it was introduced back in the 80s. Regardless of which bike you get you won’t get bored with it in a short amount of time and you likely won’t begin to feel the limitations of a 250 until you start taking it on the highway. They can do highway speeds ok, they’re just not really all that great at it.
If style really is that important to you and you want a beginner-friendly sportbike, there should only be 2 bikes on your radar: Ninja 250 and GS500F.
September 24, 2008 at 5:37 pm #12667Bianca30ParticipantYou’re too much WZ! I live in Penn Hills and would love to meet up with you….wait, I forgot that I don’t have a bike yet. South Campus is the Boyce one right? If so, that class was full, I’m going to the West Mifflin class. Plus, I woke up last week and said stop being nervous and try again. I took the class in 2004 but was kicked out because I kept going to 5th gear (even though it won’t run in 5th gear) but some how I kept doing that and they kicked me out. I was the only one who didn’t drop the bike, but it didn’t matter. They weren’t real helpful either. I asked my co worker to show me how to work the gears so when I take the class again I’ll have some knowledge, but he said no, because he don’t want me to ride, “it’s too dangerous.” Meanwhile, he rides and goes really fast! There are a lot of riders, you just have to know where to be. Like if you ride near the highland park area, you’ll see a lot of guys and gals riding. Where should I go to get a bike? Should I go used for my first one?
Ms.Bianca
September 24, 2008 at 6:06 pm #12670ilnamParticipantGreat. You just called the bike I have cute.
September 24, 2008 at 6:11 pm #12672AndrewParticipantI have the 250 Ninja and it’s a great fit for me. I’m 5’4 and I can almost, but not quite, flat foot the bike at a stand still. I only weigh 135 so it has plenty of power for what I need it to do. I did sit on a GS500 and the height difference in the seat plus the extra weight was enough to make me a lot less comfortable. You’ll want to sit on some bikes and see how much ground contact you can make. You need enough so that you feel comfortable. As a noob you will want more contact than an experience rider will.
